Putting fuel in the car with kids in tow!

This scenario has caused a strong discussion between me and my husband..

What do you do with your baby when you put fuel in the car?

So to give some context.. my husband borrowed my car yesterday and when I went to go out this morning it had no fuel in it.. so off I go to the petrol station to find the pay at pump wasn't working.. so I drove to another station and theirs wasn't working either! The petrol station was busy, I could see that there was a que inside and it's a really hot day.. so I fill up, wake my sleeping 8 month old and take him in with me to pay. He's crying from being woken, I have a sprained ankle so the whole hassle of it annoyed me.

I moan to my husband about the situation and he's says I'm being dramatic and I should of just left him in the car when I go to pay. I argue that it was hot out and I know there's a que inside so I didn't want to just leave him in the car! I couldn't fill up later as I had to go pick him up from work and didn't have enough fuel to get there. I'm annoyed with him for leaving me no fuel.. I just think it's rude to take someone's car and return it empty.

But speaking to people they seem to think he's right and I could if just left the baby in the car.. just interested to see what other people do with their little ones it they have to go inside to pay for fuel.

I leave mine in the car. I don't care if people think I shouldn't!

Crispmonster123 · 29/07/2019 18:10

I’d have left the baby in the car just like everyone I know does. I’ve never seen someone take a baby into a petrol station actually. It would be dangerous

I have never taken a child in with me. Always left them in the car. Just open the window if it's hot.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 29/07/2019 18:12

Only on MN do people take them in with them.

I have never seen somebody do this in real life!

randomsabreuse · 29/07/2019 18:13

Normally I'd leave in the car but not with today's temperatures...

Leaving a car without enough fuel (except where discussed in advance) is definitely a dick move regardless of children!

StoorieHoose · 29/07/2019 18:13

Safer to leave in the car than carrying across the forecourt. You could have opened some windows an inch for all the time you would have been in paying

Reallybadidea · 29/07/2019 18:13

Absolutely I have, and would in future, leave in car while paying. Especially when they are toddlers and walking - far safer to leave in the car.

MaximusHeadroom · 29/07/2019 18:14

Definitely leave in the car.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 29/07/2019 18:14

I think you just need to think- literally what is going to happen? You lock the cars, you can see the car at all times, no one could steal it without others noticing. No chance in hell I would risk waking my baby (though just stopping to refuel would wake him so it doesn't really apply!)

donkey86 · 29/07/2019 18:15

Leave in the car. Every time.

ChillyB · 29/07/2019 18:18

I take my baby in with me, it is annoying and awkward but i’d much rather the peace of mind that comes with the inconvenience.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 29/07/2019 18:18

No one ever drags kids across the forecourt, this is MN thing

woodhill · 29/07/2019 18:19

Always left in the car

shadowloveragain · 29/07/2019 18:20

Another one here that leaves children in the car.

StoorieHoose · 29/07/2019 18:20

Peace of mind? Can I ask what you think will happen if you leave them in the car?

Whisky2014 · 29/07/2019 18:20

I don't have kids yet but I know id leave them in the car!

Whisky2014 · 29/07/2019 18:21

But he is a twat for not filling it up!

GoBackToPartyCity · 29/07/2019 18:22

Leave in the car. I personally think it’s safer to do that than get my toddler out of the car and walk across a busy garage forecourt.

Jinglejanglefish · 29/07/2019 18:22

I always use the pay at pump if with DD but if it wasn't working id leave her. I've never seen anyone take their kids in to pay and no way in hell I am waking her.

SlimGin · 29/07/2019 18:23

If DD (10months) is awake I take her with me. She hates being in the car unless she's asleep so otherwise she'd just be screaming the entire time.

Neolara · 29/07/2019 18:24

Leave in car. I always reckoned manhandling babies and toddlers across a busy forecourt was infinity more risky than leaving them in a locked car, in my full view, for the 2 minutes it took to pay for petrol.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 29/07/2019 18:24

I saw an advert the other day on Instagram that made sense to me. Apparently BP petrol stations now have an app. So you can pay by ur phone while sitting in ur car !!!!!

CalamityJune · 29/07/2019 18:24

I try to use Pay at Pump wherever possible, child or no child, but I would leave him in car rather than carry him in. It only takes a couple of minutes and you can see them the whole time.

DerbyRacer · 29/07/2019 18:26

My ds chooses to stay in the car now he is alot older. When he was little I always took him with me. He never wanted to be alone, anywhere.
