In Winchester for half a day, lunch and walk recommendations, please?

In the area for a meeting in the morning, I’ll have lunch and a couple of hours to spare before heading home. Any gastropubs or restaurant with a lovely view and a decent wine list, would be my ideal spot, but happy to take any recommendations people have!

The Forte Kitchen is good for lunch. If you're after a pub, the Wykeham Arms is good but you may only get in with a booking. The Chesil Rectory also does a good lunch menu but again you may need to book. For a walk, the walk along the river and water meadows to St Cross almshouses is very nice. The Bridge Patisserie is good for cakes! Enjoy.

Wykeham Arms jumps to mind if you’re after a good pub. Situated in the historic/scenic part of Winchester too so you can have a little stroll around the cathedral or water meadows afterwards.

Thank you!

Walk along the river through the meadows towards St Catherine’s Hill, having wondered through town and around the cathedral.
Wykeham Arms seconded.

Definitely the water meadows walk! And along up St Catherine's Hill if you have time. It's been a while since I've eaten in Winchester but the River Cottage cafe in the Abbey Gardens is good.

Oh and the Black Boy is my favourite pub. Don't know about food there though.

The Watermeadows will be great in this weather. If you can venture just a little further out, I’d suggest Shawford Down as well - it has the most beautiful view. Have a good day!

Wykeham arms for sure if you have never been to Winchester before!
