I’m looking for some inspiration for a change of career. Currently a solicitor in a regional office of a global law firm. I work 4 days a week but the hours are still unpredictable and I am sometime required to work on my non-working day or work longer hours on the days either side of my non-working day as I am having a day out.
I have 2 children (ages 1 & 3) and I want to spend more time with them and have flexibility to take days off without worrying about work.
Currently salary is £45k but I think we could afford for me to drop to around £20-£25k. I’m the main breadwinner at the moment but DH has just got a new job with (hopefully) more chance of progression that his current role.
I’m looking for ideas from people who have left the legal profession (or similar). I don’t work in an area that lends itself to going in house (I work in commercial property) and ideally want to leave the legal profession and its unpredictable hours and being at clients’ constant beck and call behind. I think I’d enjoy a job with a bit more face to face interaction and variety. I have a law degree but went straight from school to university and then straight into my training contract so no other real work experience. Retraining by going back to university just isn’t possible right now so it needs to be something I have transferable skills for. Any ideas?
