Just taken the bins out for the first time after the weekend after being out most of the week and we have maggot EVERYWHERE.

Bin day isn’t until a week on Tuesday it’s bastarding recycling this week and we didn’t take the bins out this week because they were barely full —stupid us won’t be doing that again— can I buy something to spray on them/pour in the bin to kill them?

Or will I have to buy a fire blower and torch the entire thing before the reach the house 😂

Boiling water will kill them.

Kerberos · 28/07/2019 19:36

Last time I just left the lid open. Birds came and ate them.

Bunnybigears · 28/07/2019 19:36

I'm pretty sure slug pellets kill them.

Frangipane · 28/07/2019 19:36

A hose? Flush them down the nearest drain.

Stormwhale · 28/07/2019 19:37

Open the lid, the birds will feast on them and sort the problem!

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:37

Boiling water.
Birds.

These are excellent suggestions that I would never have thought of and wonderfully do not involve touching the buggers.

Don’t slug pellet them. Either leave kid open or boiling water them.

AnnaMagnani · 28/07/2019 19:38

Empty bin. Flush it with water to wash out as many as possible. Then boiling water.

Then try to pretend it never happened.

managedmis · 28/07/2019 19:38

It's because its been so hot

slipperywhensparticus · 28/07/2019 19:38

Salt? Allegedly kills them I have a few in my bin too which is ridiculous because it's all double bagged in there I've bought a ton of salt and slang it in

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:39

How long would it take for bird gate??

OP posts:
Cruddles · 28/07/2019 19:39

Had it happen, boiling water once the bins were emptied solved the problem

Ask for this post to be moved to the Food and recipes page Grin

@slipperywhensparticus I’m with you! I’m meticulous about double bagging something must have leaked 🤢

Ugh I feel your pain. I’ve had this problem consistently for the past 2 summers. I have to clean & bleach my green bin every week but they keep coming back. I’ve just purchased a new one as I discovered a crack in the bottom of the previous one so I’m hoping that was the problem...flies getting in & laying eggs through the crack. It’s vile. I tried everything although I didn’t think to leave the lid open as it’s too grim to look at.
Good luck. If you find a solution please let me know!

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:42

I’d swap it with the neighbours but it has our bloody number on it 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’ll get DS to bed, get a stiff drink in me and don the marigolds ... kettle gate tonight and bird breakfast in the morning. If I salt them will birds still eat them?

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:42

@Sunshine196 oh god I don’t think I could cope with this becoming a recurring theme!

PearlandRubies194 · 28/07/2019 19:43

I get this every summer too OP, even though the food bin is emptied each week. Hot water and bleach, then leave the lid open. Repeat until it goes out to the lorry

Kerberos · 28/07/2019 19:44

I'd just leave it open. Birds more likely to be attracted by wiggly maggots than dead and cooked.

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:45

Is it entirely inappropriate to hand scalding kettle to a three year old and give him the responsibility. He’s had a free ride until now, think it’s time he earns his keep! (Obviously joking)

It really stresses me out. My DH on the other hand couldn’t care less so it’s up to me to tackle maggot gate 🤢. If I don’t do it each week it is unbearable with them spilling out everywhere. I get so embarrassed when I have to put my maggot infested bin out in the path for emptying!
Fly powder did a decent job of killing them off if used regularly but i still have to clean weekly.

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:46

Will buying a bin store stop them coming back? Been thinking about getting one for a while and this might be the kick up the arse!

I had this last year. I poured cheap table salt all over and in the bin whilst the bags were in there and routinely throughout the day as well as each time I put a bin in there. Then, once the bin had been emptied, poured boiling water in, rinsed/washed round and emptied, then Jeyes fluid with boiling water, leave to stand, then rinse. Leave to dry. Then, Jeyes do a powder which I repeatedly put in the bin as well.

Sunshine196 · 28/07/2019 19:47

What I have been doing is putting a large bin bag in then my waste in smaller bags in that. Tie up the large bin bag just before collection so most of the live stock gets chucked in the bin wagon.
What have I become 🙈

SoundofSilence · 28/07/2019 19:47

This just happened to me with my green waste bin. I killed them with boiling water then shook some biodegradable cat litter in the next day to soak up the water so I didn't have a binful of Satan's soup. There will be more boiling water and a hosing-out once it has been emptied next week.
