Just taken the bins out for the first time after the weekend after being out most of the week and we have maggot EVERYWHERE.

Bin day isn’t until a week on Tuesday it’s bastarding recycling this week and we didn’t take the bins out this week because they were barely full —stupid us won’t be doing that again— can I buy something to spray on them/pour in the bin to kill them?

Or will I have to buy a fire blower and torch the entire thing before the reach the house 😂

I hosed and then bought some bin buddy

Isitweekendyet · 29/07/2019 09:32

I've heard bin men won't take bins that have maggots, is that true?

Bin men call maggots 'disco rice' Grin

Moondancer73 · 29/07/2019 10:04

Fly spray is your friend here - I speak from experience.

Get them out quick before they turn into a cloud of blue bottles...

Not sure about the council I'm in now, but my old one wouldn't take the compostable/biodegradable bags with food waste. They insisted food waste be loose in the brown bin.
After the great maggot incident of 09 I never recycled food waste again.

bebeboeuf · 29/07/2019 11:24

I was thinking of starting a compost pile but worried about causing maggots.

Is it just certain types of food waste that can go on a compost heap?

BlackCatSleeping · 29/07/2019 11:32

Can you still buy powdered soap in the UK? Like Vim? I buy it here in the dollar shop and sprinkle it over maggots and it kills them instantly.

Oldraver · 29/07/2019 11:58

If you do pour boiling water on cover your nose, they smell vile boiled

We have a bin cleaner, liner in the bin and don't put any food in the bin and the fuckers still lay eggs on the bag

slipperywhensparticus · 29/07/2019 12:49

You cant put food in the compost bin you need a green cone for that

Sn0tnose · 29/07/2019 14:17

Is it entirely inappropriate to hand scalding kettle to a three year old and give him the responsibility. He’s had a free ride until now, think it’s time he earns his keep! Of course it’s inappropriate! Your average three year old is much shorter than your average wheely bin. He’d never reach. You’d need to make sure you got the stepladders out for him before handing him the kettle. I don’t think you’ve thought this through OP!

I had to shut the lid yesterday cause of torrential rain, opened it this morning - fecking baby maggots 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Left it open all day & this afternoon they’re all gone. Didn’t see what ate them but I don’t care as long as they’re gone

mineofuselessinformation · 29/07/2019 23:56

If you still have maggots in the morning, just open the bin if it's going to be a dry day.
Hopefully the heat will kill them, or they will be eaten. (Repeat this until your bin is collected.)
After your bin is emptied, wash your bin out and let the water go into the grass. If there's any maggots still alive, the birds will dispose of them for you. Leave the bin upside down to drain, and then leave the lid up so it dries inside. (If it is going to rain, prop the lid up on something a bit so it will still air.)

CrispbuttyNo1 · 30/07/2019 00:01

Rinse out all your packaging and don't put food waste in the bin. You won't get them any more.

Singlenotsingle · 30/07/2019 00:05

Spray the bin with any cleaning agent. Cilit Bang? Then of course you've got to wash the whole mess down the loo.

Dieu · 30/07/2019 00:38

I just can't imagine birds divebombing into the bins!

MyAppleTree · 30/07/2019 19:21

! I left my bin open yesterday and today - NO MAGGOTS.

Thank you to the poster with the birdie tip Grin

Isitweekendyet · 04/08/2019 08:51

As of yesterday afternoon all maggots have gone!

We’ve left the lid open virtually all week and we keep spraying them with raid so just have to carry on until bin day!

Thank you everyone!

Bubblysqueak · 04/08/2019 08:55

Don't leave the lid open and spray with raid, one or the other, otherwise the poor birds are eating poison.

ComeOnGordon · 05/08/2019 17:14

Fuckwit exH shut the brown bin yesterday for reasons only he would know and I didn’t notice till an hour ago - even in that 24 hours there are already hundreds AngryAngry some birds will be well fed tonight now the lid is back open
