Just taken the bins out for the first time after the weekend after being out most of the week and we have maggot EVERYWHERE.

Bin day isn’t until a week on Tuesday it’s bastarding recycling this week and we didn’t take the bins out this week because they were barely full —stupid us won’t be doing that again— can I buy something to spray on them/pour in the bin to kill them?

Or will I have to buy a fire blower and torch the entire thing before the reach the house 😂

I just spray fly killer in there and close the lid quick.

fblake · 28/07/2019 19:49

I left my bin lid open too. The birds ate them 😊

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 19:50

I’m itching and I keep having flashbacks oh god I’m terrible with maggots. 🤢

I’m glad it happens to everyone else! I thought we were just mingers, makes leaving the lid open much more appealing! Our v posh elderly neighbours will not be best impressed however.

I’ve just had this in our garden bin after stupidly putting a headless bird in there ( must of been full of maggots)
I’d opened lid after few days and it was covered. I sprayed with fly spray, which killed them.
Thankfully was emptied day after and dh cleaned out

RightMover · 28/07/2019 19:54

Oh my god I'm getting flashbacks 😫😫
We had this last year, absolutely bloody awful. We'd been on holiday, got back late and went out to the outside bin to find it absolutely full of them. They were spilling out onto the floor, Jesus it was terrible.
We took everything out, thank god we had been away so it wasn't full..swilled it out with boiling water and bleach. Then triple bagged what rubbish we had and put it back in. Bin was emptied 2 days later, then I washed it out again and have been so careful to make sure the bin is clean and the lid is shut.
The stuff of nightmares honestly.

ComeOnGordon · 28/07/2019 19:54

I’m not in the UK and we’re only allowed to put food in brown paper bags in the bin so the maggots were rife. Then the neighbor told me to put some scrunched up newspaper at the bottom to absorb any liquid and leave the lid open. It’s been amazing - not a single maggot even tho it was 41 degrees the other day. And it weirdly doesn’t smell

ComeOnGordon · 28/07/2019 19:55

@RightMover keeping the lid shut is making it ideal conditions for them. They want a dark moist place. Lid open stops them multiplying

DaphneFanshaw · 28/07/2019 19:58

Fly killer or flea killer is the only thing that will keep them dead for a week.
Boiling water does work but might not kill all the eggs, cheap flea spray does both. I did mine earlier this week and they haven't come back.

Sunshine196 · 28/07/2019 19:58

I’ll be honest, this post is giving me some comfort. When I’ve admitted my maggotty shame to my friends to ask advice they’ve all denied having them. Maybe they are all liars & it’s more common than we think.

SwingoutSisterSledge · 28/07/2019 19:58

I had this last year tons of salt left over night then a good bleach in the morning. They never came back. I always put a bit of salt in now after the binmen have been have had no problems this year.

sleepwhenimred · 28/07/2019 20:01

Opened my bin tonight and it is full of the wriggly little bastards. I'm off out to open the lid and let the birds feast!

LadyFlumpalot · 28/07/2019 20:01

Stick a post on your local Facebook page advertising them free to anybody who fishes in return for them collecting them from the bin themselves?

Rivkka · 28/07/2019 20:02

Seriously just leave it open. The little birdies will eat well tonight!

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 20:03

@sleepwhenimred please will you come and do mine too!

What do you do with your rubbish if the lid is open? Presumably put it somewhere else till maggots gone? How long does it take for birds to scoff them all? Sorry to sound thick!!

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 20:08

@fireballfriends these are all excellent questions.

Dear god do I have to empty the bin?!

We tipped them out and fed them to the chickens. We also have a mealworm farm for the same purpose

Avocadodance · 28/07/2019 20:10

You can pay for someone to clean your wheelie bin in our area. You can get a one off clean for a fiver or get it done weekly for £3. I'm definitely getting a one off one booked as loads of flies flew out my bin the other day. I went out today expecting the worst but nothing to speak of. I haven't been brave enough to actually look in the bin though...

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/07/2019 20:10

Is this because of food waste going in the bin? I must say I'm pretty lax with him cleaning but have never had maggots in them!! We have general waste, recycling, and separate food caddy.

SummerHouse · 28/07/2019 20:10

Do you have any open, rotting wounds? Maggots are used in NHS treatment as they eat only the dead flesh and don't touch the healthy tissue. Amazing and effective treatment. They just bandage you up with hundreds of maggots.

Apologies for going off topic. Just had to share after learning this from Dr Chris and Dr Xand.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/07/2019 20:11

Bin cleaning. Not him cleaning.....

AnnonniMoose · 28/07/2019 20:11

Ugh - I had this earlier this week over the very hot days. I put my black back of rubbish outside the back door couldn't be bothered trudging through the dark garden to the wheely bin, and the next day the whole bag was just a white crawling mass. Ugh. Shudder. I left it out for the birds, but there were still so many, so I blasted the bag with ant spray and it killed them all Grin.

Isitweekendyet · 28/07/2019 20:12

This reeks of my effing husband, the bin is my job but my god this has him written all over it.

Do birds come in rain??

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/07/2019 20:15

Yes but not at this time of day I shouldn't think!
