How can I make black bedroom furniture look nice?!

I could use the collective wisdom of MN!

We are moving house soon. Our bedroom has dark wood floor, white walls and one feature wall in rich teal. It has the original fireplace in which is black. Sadly all our bedroom furniture is cheap black stuff Sad We can't afford to replace it so I'm wondering how I'm going to make the room look nice, with as little cost as possible. Any ideas?! I would love a nautical theme, we have some seaside bunting and a really nice nautical duvet set but is that going to work with black? 🤔 Help!!

What furniture do you have and what's it made of? Even melamine can be painted.

I wouldn't hesitate if it's cheap...just paint it all. Have a lovely, light room.

Its two wardrobes, two chests of drawers and two bedside tables. I don't know what they are made of tbh, they are just basic cheap tat from asda!

Get three of these in the larger size....over the bed or fireplace.

A striped duvet cover in blue and white. Some nice white and blue pillows and cushions.

These are nice too!

They're probably some kind of melamine type stuff.

B&Q has loads of options for paint that will cover it.

BertieBotts · 27/07/2019 12:55

Is the description of the room the new bedroom or your current one?

I wouldn't go nautical. I think that would look better with white or driftwood type colour. With the dark wood, black features and teal I'd go for something more contrasty with bright colours - maybe something like one of these? interiorgod.com/17-turquoise-and-black-bedroom-ideas-for-your-home/ You'd just need bedding (you might have some fitting in black, white, or brights already) and some prints for the walls with plain black or white frames - you could do this very cheaply with ikea frames or a set of frames from amazon.

What kind of style is the fireplace? Victorian? Simple, elegant, boxy?

TwistedStrawberry · 27/07/2019 13:17

The description is the new bedroom.

Some good ideas here! Thanks Grin

I love those seashell lights!

Fireplace is smallish, black wrought iron Victorian style.

Have you any budget to replace the basic ikea stuff? Or live with the black until you have? I think painting cheap black furniture will probably look worse than the black tbh.

Dowser · 27/07/2019 23:46

I would definitely repaint.
I painted cheap a cheap tatty bedroom set and it turned out great
I used a roller
Secret it to put the first coat on thinly

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 28/07/2019 00:32

Could you do anything Japanese style? The colours you mention sound like they would work?

HennyPennyHorror · 28/07/2019 03:38

Baby it can look really good if done well. I've seen plenty of upcycling done like that. Light furniture is always better than cheap black.

MimiSunshine · 28/07/2019 03:48

Nautical with black furniture and a dark teal wall isnt going to work.

I’d either paint out the teal with white and get some patterned bedding in a light colour (geometric print would be nice)then replace the door knobs on your furniture with some matching and contrasting coloured ones or spray paint them.

If you can’t paint the wall then get some print bedding in other jewel tones and leave as is, add in some copper accessories/ framed mirrors and go for a boudoir opulent look

sashh · 28/07/2019 04:16

I've spray painted and changed the handles on cheap furniture, it works well.

Just remember to use lots of thin layers and don't worry if the black shows through after the first coat.

HennyPennyHorror · 28/07/2019 04:43

Mimi I don't think the teal is an issue with a nautical theme. Teal is reminiscent of the ocean after all. The black furniture needs painting though. And why would OP go for a 'boudoir, opulent look" when she's said she wants nautical? Confused

Aquamarine1029 · 28/07/2019 04:48

Definitely paint it. There is amazing spray paint now-a-days. Take it outside and spray the black away!

Jenasaurus · 28/07/2019 04:53

i Have a similar theme and black furniture. I will send a photo when the rooms tidy it works well. I have a white and blue striped duvet. I bought a white ikea bed and it looks good.

Dowser · 28/07/2019 10:14

Yes spray paint is good.
I painted a good heavy duty brown wood toilet seat ( I hate cheap flimsy ones) in my caravan with silver.
Still going strong two years later
