New backpack smells of fish

I bought DS1 a very cute backpack on Amazon for his first schoolbag. However, it arrived yesterday and it has a noticeable smell of fish. I know it's just the glue or dye or whatever from the material but is it likely to fade? I don't want to start putting bicarb etc on it as I can just return it and buy something else if it's unlikely to improve.

Unlikely to improve.

It’s a preservative I believe that they goat the fabric in.

Argh I thought that. It's really nice apart from that and has over 100 reviews averaging 4.9/5 with no-one else mentioning a fishy smell! Maybe we just got a bad one so I might ask for an exchange.
