Can someone please talk me through, in simple steps, what we need to do.

We want to have a 2 floor extension and move some room about but we have absolutely no idea where to start (we must have missed that day at grown up school).

You need to find someone to draw up some plans and submit them to the council. I contacted a builder who gave me a couple of numbers for people who could do plans. I didnt really know where to start either but once I had details for the plans it just took off.

Thank you! Will ring around some builders next week.

I contacted an architect who came round and gave us lots of options that we hadn't actually thought about. He drew up the plans for planning permission and handled all of that part and once accepted drew the plans for building regulations.

The building regulation plans were shown to several builders to get quotes for actually doing the work.

I suggest finding an Architect. My brother and SIL found that the ideas they came up with for the redesign and renovation of our DP house were really helpful and they were up to speed on things like building regs and energy saving ideas.
