When you buy big purchases that come in those huge cardboard boxes...how long do you tend to keep them incase the item isn't up to standard? I bought an expensive craft machine 2 weeks ago and still have the box sitting out and I'm too worried to bin it incase I need to return!

Me: throw it out the same day.
DH: keeps it for years.

Trumpton · 27/07/2019 07:14

Ha ! @Saucery

Same in our house !

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 27/07/2019 07:19

@Saucery same here! Maybe its a man thingHmm

putonyourdancingshoes · 27/07/2019 07:19

I like to keep the big boxes for a few weeks, however OH keeps hundreds of little boxes for phones he no longer has! Hmm

DH puts them all in the loft to keep forever just in case.

Me: 🤔😕🙄

Saucery · 27/07/2019 07:29

Oh, the phone boxes!

PalindromicUser · 27/07/2019 07:31

OP why do you keep the box? It’s not necessary to be able to return a faulty item. Your receipt should be plenty.

SlocombePooter · 27/07/2019 07:42

Yep, appliance boxes carefully kept by DH in case anything goes wrong under guarantee. We had quite a museum of them in the attic before the last cull.

Just any boxes, because "it's a useful size" (??) DH was quite upset when supermarkets started flattening boxes and he couldn't find many good ones.

We are intending to move house at some point and he does use that as an excuse for assembling his cardboard trousseau, but honestly I think he just likes boxes.

Doormat247 · 27/07/2019 07:56

What's the deal with men and keeping boxes forever? My exh hoarded them in the loft 'just in case something needed to be returned'.
My partner recently went up there to clear it out a bit and there were HUNDREDS. Some of them so big that there could never be another use for them. We threw a mountain of them out of the window (flattened) and it came up past the bottom windows 🙈.
Turns out my partner is also a box hoarder and he still left almost 100 up there as they were 'really good sizes' 😣

RJnomore1 · 27/07/2019 08:05

Yep we moved this year abd found boxes for items we haven’t had for years.

In fairness the 12 year old dyson did go nicely back in its box. It’s now in its box under the stairs “just in case”

I think we have the boxes for every Apple product ever bought there too.

putonyourdancingshoes · 27/07/2019 08:15

@PalindromicUser I keep them because I purchase most of them online. I know I should get rid ...maybe in a week or so Grin

SlocombePooter · 27/07/2019 08:16

Doormat they are often not only "a really good size", but "a decent thickness" ;-)

Lamentations · 27/07/2019 08:21

I quietly discarded DH's old phone box yesterday. The phone is trashed but I know he'd never throw it out.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 27/07/2019 08:33

Keep it until the next recycling pickup.

Doormat247 · 27/07/2019 08:54

@SlocombePooter ah yes the boxes of a decent thickness can never be thrown away. Good size and a decent thickness together are the holy grail of man-box collection 🙄

putonyourdancingshoes · 27/07/2019 10:35

I also like to buy plastic storage boxes and drawers with no prior planning of what will go in them. Grin

Oh yes , we had boxes for items we no longer owned Hmm

My DMum is a hoarder and keeps boxes, baskets, the plastic tubs from ice-cream, laundry tablets anything to put "things" in.

Last time I was up at her house she had a huge cardbox box ( I think from a vacuum cleaner) with clothes draped over it because she couldn't get to her wardrobe .........................because the huge bloody box was in the way .

I moved an empty suitcase , otherwise she'd fill that with crap.

Only solution is to flatten them and recycle .

DDad kept saying "Oh your Mum might want to keep that box" (I gave him an evil glare . Such an enabler he is)
