Damaged toenail/ fake nail?

I've dropped something on my toe a while back and half of it has gone black and is starting to come off. It's the right half, as in it's coming off vertically down the right side and half way along the bottom. I can't see if there's a new nail growing underneath.
I'm worried I'll catch the loose bit on something and rip the whole nail off. If I cut the loose bit off it'll look odd, so I thought perhaps I can stick a false nail over the top of my good bit of nail and paint it? Anyone done that/ had any success/ any recommendations?? Thanks.

Yes. My toenail came off recently after being black for a long time. Sounds funny but if I'm going out and plan wearing toeless shoes I buy a pack of cheapish fake nails and use the thumb ones as fake big toe nails. I always use my own separate nail glue and paint it to match my other toes. They tend to stay on and look ok.

ILE35 thank you. What nail glue do you use?
I'm going to probably have half a nail (vertically rather than horizontally) if I cut the loose bit off, and I'm worried if I stick a false nail onto the remaining half it's going to look odd.

Hi again OP I'm not sure of a name I just find that if you buy your own, normally just out of savers, superdrug etc it always has more of a hold than the glue that comes in the pack of nails. It only costs 2 or 3 pounds and you get brush on stuff too. My new nail is growing in so kinda half a nail too now lol and I'm not sure how it would look with a fake nail on top but I'd try and see :)

You can buy artificial toenails on amazon, Nailene they are called. I have used them a few times when I had a gross habit of picking my toenails off. I have just about broken the habit now by keeping up with Shellac on my toes but the Nailene ones are pretty good as a stopgap.

You can buy fake toenails, you don't need to use the thumb out of a finger packet! I've used them loads of times but generally file them down at the bottom so they aren't too long then paint them. They look more natural that way. They are also less likely to get caught on anything. Usually the glue keeps them on for a week or so, when I can feel it getting loose I just peel it off, file the dried glue from my toenail and glue it back on.

Thanks everyone, I'll get some fake nails and have an experiment.

The nail on my second toe regularly grows then falls off and when it's off I just paint the nail end till its grown again!
