Car passengers

I am a car driver, if I get given a lift anywhere I don't feel the need to tell the driver when the road is clear to pull out or repeat the instructions on the sat nav.
I guess they can drive alone without my imput.
So why does my friend always feel the need to sit there like a driving instructor giving me prompts. I have asked her many times not to but she can't help herself. And no... I am a good driver before you ask Wink
Can I ask if you you feel the need to prompt... why??

Usually because if I don't my husband will go the wrong way.

When I'm a passenger I have to resist the instinct to give advice like that. I know the driver is perfectly capable of driving without any help from me or I wouldn't be letting them give me a lift.

I tend to tell the driver when the road is clear purely because as a passenger I have a different perspective and sometimes this gives me a clearer view. As for directions DH is a crap navigator so if I don’t tell him where to go we’ll never get where we’re going!

VanGoghsDog · 26/07/2019 15:16

I agree passengers have a different view and also are sometimes in the way of the driver's view so their input is helpful.

Though I never used to do it, until I was a passenger with now bf who actually asks me to tell him if the road is clear 'my way', so now I do.

msmith501 · 26/07/2019 15:22

I sometimes do this too but it's because I am a nervous passenger (and clearly the best driver on the roads)... the words pop out before I've filtered them. As for my passenger braking foot - it's constantly in use!

SnuggyBuggy · 26/07/2019 15:25

This may sound weird but when I'm feeling anxious I become that passenger. I have to try and stare at my feet so as not to be annoying

Nesssie · 26/07/2019 15:29

Because as the passenger you feel very vulnerable not being in control about when to pull out of junctions etc
Your life is literally in their hands. Its why you do the foot braking thing too.

This. And I usually tell someone which way to go before their satnav does. They don't need a satnav if they've got me!

I wonder how some people ever manage to take buses ?

SnuggyBuggy · 26/07/2019 16:06

@SerendipityJane
