Why do washing machines need a first wash?

DP got his first washing machine for flat. Yes, we are a young couple- I don’t live with him, we are new to all this stuff. It said it had to be put on a first wash with a bit of detergent which we have done. This is a stupid question but why is this? Is this a common thing across all brands of machines? Is it to ensure the machine is clean/ will work properly as I’m thinking?

I got a new washing machine a few weeks ago, which also came with the instruction of an empty first time wash. The instructions say 'this get rid of any possible dirt in the drum and pipes'. Mine is an AEG.

Yes this is standard advice to ensure the pipes are clear of any dirt before you put your laundry in. My mum ignored it once, she had just moved into a new build and ended up with muddy washing.
