What now? Shock

wheresmyhairytoe · 25/07/2019 15:00

What?!

Camomila · 25/07/2019 15:03

I'd have to re-read the books again, the main thing I can remember is that they weren't allowed wands (discrimination) but otoh they did get to look after everyones money (like Switzerland)

The more obvious comparison would be
Death Eaters = Nazis
Muggle Borns = Jews

What crap. Goblins are ancient folk lore creatures who like money and jewels. Pre date Jews in Western Europe probably. I have Jewish ancestry and that never ever occurred to me. Sounds like you are shot stirring tbh.

iwantadishwasher · 25/07/2019 15:05

I don't think so, unless you have stereotypical views that you are projecting?

TheVandalsTookTheHandles · 25/07/2019 15:05

According to the podcast Witch Please they are.

Ah, so it must be true then.....

Wolfff · 25/07/2019 15:09

I can’t imagine JK Rowling being anti Semitic in any way shape or form. The Death Eaters, with their ideas of racial purity are meant to symbolise the Nazis i believe.

BertrandRussell · 25/07/2019 15:12

They fit so many of the stereotype tropes used by anti semites-i’m listening for the first time in many years. It’s quite uncomfortable.

Oh wind yoyr neck in iklboo obviously not. Hmm just commenting that this is something that other people have noticed.

“The Death Eaters, with their ideas of racial purity are meant to symbolise the Nazis i believe.”

Yes- that’s very obvious. And words like Undesirables fit in with the recreation of a Fascist state.

Erm..i suppose jewish people werent allowed to join the guilds and did banking and goldsmithing and were treated very badly so i sort of see where you are coming from. But they arent very sympatheicslly portrayed so i cant see jk rowling doing that.

TheVandalsTookTheHandles · 25/07/2019 15:18

And apparently the centaurs represent first nation Americans. Who knows ?

Camomila · 25/07/2019 15:25

... and Warewolves are meant to represent the stigma faced by people with HIV.

I think some of her analogies are pretty blunt/obvious but tbf they are kids/YA books.

I in no way think JKR is an anti-semite, not for a single second, but she does have form for tropes in the HP series, fat people being nasty and stupid, thick working class people etc.

BertrandRussell · 25/07/2019 17:12

It’s just very old fashioned seeming. Like the depiction of people from “The East” in Biggles books.
