Anyone taken betahistine?

Hi there,

I've recently been prescribed betahistine but I have a bit of a fear of taking prescription medicine due to side effects.
Has anyone tried this drug and if so did you experience any side effects?
Is it quite a safe drug?

Thank you for any help!

I take them. I have BPV. I’ve never had any side effects or anything.

Thank you so much for replying. Great to hear you've had no side effects, so reassuring. Has it helped with your vertigo?

Has it helped with your vertigo?

I think it has helped a little but I do still get attacks.

averydizzyperson · 25/07/2019 11:59

I have Ménière’s- I can’t get out of bed without betahistine. It doesn’t stop all the vertigo and I still have bad attacks but it means I can stand without falling.

Side effects are minimal as long as I eat with each tablet, otherwise my stomach is awful.

Thank you all for the reassurance, at least I know there is hope!

Currently feeling miserable and stuck in bed. It's great to know this may help with minimal side effects

I sometimes have trouble getting my repeat prescriptions though. We get random locums at our surgery and many of them say that betahistines can’t be taken for more than 7 days at a time 😡.

allooha · 25/07/2019 12:37

Oh that's interesting @BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou, how strange. How long have you been on it? How long does it take to start working?

Sorry for the million questions!!

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou that’s so weird. I’ve definitely been on them for more than 7 days :/

My pharmacy often doesn’t have enough, so I have to go back and pick the rest up a week later almost every single time.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 25/07/2019 14:57

How long does it take to start working

My attacks are pretty random but I noticed a reduction in the frequency after a couple of months. It might have worked more quickly but I could sometimes go a couple of months between attack’s anyway.

allooha · 25/07/2019 15:46

Ah okay. Mine are pretty persistent at the moment meaning my life is miserable currently. If anyone has any tips on fast ways to improve this please let me know!

If you google 'vertigo exercises' or similar, there is lots of advice on how these can help too (along with medication).

tangledyarn · 25/07/2019 16:17

Definitely Google VRT exercises. I have 4 different vestibular disorders and the exercises are sadly the only thing that really helps, getting up and moving, turning your head and walking are all really important. You'll feel terrible but it will help your brain compensate and you should slowly improve.

allooha · 25/07/2019 18:56

Thank you for the tips, I'm about to take my first betahistine. I hope it works soon
