Bleeding for 6 weeks now after having copper coil inserted!!!

Hi there

Just been a bit worried for the past few weeks as I've had non stop bleeding for around 6 to 7 weeks now since the copper coil was inserted. I was originally on the depo injection but I was allergic to it and was told i had to change to a non hormonal contraceptive to avoid another allergic reaction. However once the copper coil was inserted, 5 days later I began to bleed and haven't stopped since. I've had a scan and the nurse said everything looked fine and the coil was in place. So is this normal to bleed after the coil and if yes how long does it take to stop because it's getting very frustrating now Sad

Thank you sorry for the long paragraph ... hoping for some replies to give me a bit of hope x

It can take a while to settle. The first one I had was too large for me (not yet had a baby) and the period pains and bleeding were beyond anything I'd ever imagined.

I had it removed after 18 months because it just wouldn't settle. Doctors advised it based on the fact it was the 10 year one and more than likely too big.

The second one I had was the 5 year. Apart from about two months or so of really painful period pains and then about 12 months of bad but not horrific pains it was great. My bleeding was fine on it. In fact I had it removed at just under five years to have a baby.

I've had the 10 year one back in after having DD and it's nothing like either previous experience. No pains, no heavy bleeds, nothing.

There are several different types of copper coil out there - there were at least five different ones on the advice sheet they gave me. You have to find the one that's right for you.

I bled for 5 months and felt terrible. I pulled it out myself about a month ago and I've never felt better. I'm gutted because that seemed like it was gonna be the one for me with regards to no hormones ect.

I bled for weeks and weeks and finally asked to have it removed. I was the same with the implant. I'm obviously not compatible with contraception!

God I hated the copper coil

Bled for weeks when it first went in

Then 10-14 day periods every month. With horrendous period pain like I was in labour. I even got severe ovulation pain. Kept going to the drs but just getting told it will settle and it just never did. It was still happening like a year later so ended up even sent for scans, a uterus biopsy and everything, All was fine, so only explanation was the coil

Stuck at it another year or so but eventually had it taken out,
Oh the relief

Sorry I realise this prob isn't helpful! But I would hate anyone else to suffer like I did

My coil perforated my uterus and caused PID. Bled for over six months.

PaulinesPenStash Honestly that is really something I will probably think about doing too. I feel really aneamic due to the constant blood loss and just think my body has been through enough having my first daughter 2 years ago and then 11 months later giving birth to twin boys so I think my body is just fed up being poked and prodded it just wants to be left alone to get back into a normal cycle again Grin

Andromeida59 Oh God that sounds terrible Shock, thankfully I had a scan last week they said the coil seems to be in the right place so it's more likely linked to hormonal imbalance

Mincepies76 honestly that's exactly how I feel but can't take the chance of having anymore children at the moment my hands are definitly full 😄

I had the copper coil fitted a month ago and have been bleeding ever since. Dr has prescribed me Norethisterone. I started taking it Friday lunchtime and it stopped the bleeding by lunchtime yesterday.

I've got to take it for three weeks and then stop to have a period. The Dr says that should reset my cycle and I shouldn't have any problems after that. I'm sceptical but enjoying the break from bleeding!

Hi just wanted to give a little update after the post 2 weeks later the bleeding stopped for 1 week and then went back to the constant bleeding on and off heavy light bleeding it’s been 4 weeks now and I am extremely aneamic have been prescribed iron tablets but have seriously given up on keeping coil in I’m just worried now Incase something else is wrong with me that’s causing the bleeding I’ve been referred to gaenecology dep to see what’s going on Sad feel really nervous has anyone else been like this with copper coil it’s been just over 3 months since it’s been inserted. Really want to see if anyone has had the same experience as me and is it best to get it removed?
