Siren in a thunderstorm near Oxford

Hi

We were unfortunate enough to be sleeping in a bell-tent through what felt like a nuclear apocalypse last night. I’ve never heard thunder or seen lightning like it. It was scary enough at 2am, but then an air-raid siren went off. We panicked in our half-asleep state, wondering if we should get our sleeping (no idea how!) children out and into a building. Eventually it calmed and we went back to sleep.

Then this morning we heard the siren again a couple of times. We couldn’t find the campsite guy when we left to ask. Just wondering if anyone has a clue what it could be?!

Yes I think Brize is still too far away. It sounded very close by. We did see a lot of planes pretty low, my boys loved the plane spotting!

I was working in Woodstock once and heard Blenheim Palace’s fire alarm go off, that sounded very similar to an air raid siren but not sure that noise would have travelled far enough across the A40 to wake you up though!

I would say there wasn't a siren from Brize but I slept through the entire storm so I have no idea. I shall ask dh later Grin

Side question re Lightning Alarms.

Aren't they a bit redundant? I mean, you have the actual lightning as a bit of a guide!

Totally agree about lightning alarms! It had already been going for ages before the alarm sounded. Just added to the worry!

We live within the range of the Broadmoor siren. It got hit by lightning a few years ago & went off all night. Scared the crap out of me when if went off not on a Monday morning at 10am!
