Do you iron ALL of your DCs clothes?

Obviously I do the stuff that. Needs it like shirts etc, but I've never bothered with plain cotton t-shirts and jogging bottoms etc particularly as DS is only 18 months and gets them covered in all sorts.
However MIL was over yesterday babysitting and she's ironed all DSs tips because she "can't bear it when he's not turned out properly".
Is this overkill or am I just a slummy mummy?
Personally I'd rather play with him on my days off than sit ironing.

Yes and their pj's which I know some will find really weird but I just kind of have to

clucky3 · 24/07/2019 12:57

I iron absolutely nothing

OtraCosaMariposa · 24/07/2019 12:58

We don't have a tumble dryer. Folded when it comes in off the line and it doesn't need ironed mostly.

I don’t iron. DH sends out and pays for shirts.
Kids look messy by lunchtime anyway. But to be honest if you fold out of dryer nothing looks that crumpled.

People who judge? More fool you for spending hours ironing. Better things to do!

BlackInk · 24/07/2019 13:11

@Bookworm4 ... But you said above "I’ve yet to come across all these kids with unironed clothes" and I can assure you that you have come across them, you just haven't noticed. Yes, there will be some children wearing crumpled clothes (clothes not dried neatly, clothes shoved into drawers, clothes waiting in the ironing heap that are needed before they get ironed...), but not ironing does not = crumpled clothes.

I don't use a tumble drier. I don't own one. I remove clothes from the washing machine straight away and hang them neatly to dry outside on the line or inside on airers. When they are dry I fold them reasonably neatly or hang them up.

The only fabric this doesn't work for is linen, which I don't buy because it looks crumpled within moments of putting it on anyway.

Ironing is time-consuming (or expensive if you pay someone to do it) and most people are time poor. I get about an hour a day in which to relax (once DC are in bed and all work/jobs done) and I don't plan to spend that time ironing when the difference is, as you admit, imperceivable.

motherofcats81 · 24/07/2019 13:42

"Not properly turned out"? Is he entering the military?

Most clothes nowadays are designed not to be ironed, and especially little children's clothes which are half elastane. I only have about one or two dresses of my own that need ironing, let alone my kid's.

Your MIL is being ridiculous and god yes spend time with your baby rather than doing totally unnecessary chores that no one would ever notice.

Pipandmum · 24/07/2019 13:45

Ha no my teenage son made me buy an iron so he could iron his own clothes (though he doesn’t iron his uniform). Never ever ironed a school shirt in my life. Or just about anything else (though now that we have an iron I will iron my linen tops). When my husband was alive the cleaning lady ironed his shirts. We moved after he passed and somehow the iron never came with!

Youngandfree · 24/07/2019 13:48

Yes I iron everything except
Towels
Tea towels
Underwear
Bedding!( but I fold them straight away so they get no creases and sometimes will give them a quick press with the iron if they are extremely creased!)

mindutopia · 24/07/2019 13:48

The only clothes I iron for my dc are dd's school summer dresses (because I stupidly bought the ones that crease this year - will make sure not to make that mistake again). Otherwise, the only other things I've ever ironed were maybe formal attire for a wedding.

I only occasionally iron a few work shirts for myself that need ironing or work trousers in the winter. Beyond that, there is no ironing in our house. I am either working or busy until about 9:30-10pm every night as it is/same with dh (we both have to work in the evenings). I value sleep more than crease free clothes.

Whatthefunk · 24/07/2019 13:57

I only iron shirts. I tight roll everything else

meowcatmeow · 24/07/2019 13:58

I don't iron ANYTHING!
DH does his work shirts and some T-shirt's of his.
Kids look fine, they play out a lot and always look filthy by the end of the day...ironing won't help that!

itseasybeingcheesy · 24/07/2019 14:53

Nope.
There's a handful of things in each of our wardrobes that look awful if worn unironed but other than those few things nothing gets ironed. DH and me split the ironing roughly every 2 weeks and iron his shirts and the faffy items. Other than that everything else just gets hung up after drying.

itseasybeingcheesy · 24/07/2019 14:59

And honestly why are people wasting their time and energy judging people who don't iron?
Unless a child's clothes are smelly or they are obviously not hygienic then assume their parent is doing the absolute best they can for that child and sometimes ironing just isn't going to be a priority.
And if a kid's school polo is a bit crinkled at 9am or there's a splash of milk on their school trousers just get over it. By 3:30 their clothes will be scruffy and stinky and by 7pm they'll be in the washing basket all over again. Life is too short for this crap and people should care more about people than appearances.

user1487194234 · 24/07/2019 15:00

I iron everything ((actually send most of it out for ironing)
throwback to my working class upbringing of very high standards of housekeeping on my maternal line. seems to have skipped a generation (or 2 judging by state of dcs rooms) !!

NerrSnerr · 24/07/2019 15:25

The only time I iron is when my daughter is doing Hama beads!

Delatron · 24/07/2019 16:40

I do think it’s a working class thing to be ‘well turned out’ so people don’t judge.

I had a working class upbringing and my mum wore herself in to the ground ironing everything, polishing our shoes etc. Scared that people would judge.

She despairs of my non ironing ways and the fact the kids shoes aren’t perfect and shiny. I don’t care a bit of someone who has too much time on their hands spots a few creases in a perfectly clean school shirt. Says more about them than me....

SudowoodoVoodoo · 24/07/2019 17:49

If my DCs polo shirts are ironed, it's because I realised late on that they'd run low and I put them on a quick wash and needed to dry them ASAP with the heat of the iron.

For the majority of modern clothes with a mix of content including synthetic fibres, they don't need ironing, and unless they were dumped in a heap and left to dry in that state, after 30 minutes of wear, there is little difference in the creases that work their way in compared to an item that was ironed.

You can tell when I've had the iron out as I inevitably iron in some heavy creases in the quest to coerce an item designed to be worn in a 3 dimensional form into 2 dimensions. For the majority of items it's far better to not iron as I usually make them worse.

steppemum · 25/07/2019 14:04

and i must be an ‘utter twat’ Hmm because i do judge the parents

well you said it, yes you are.
What a meaningless thing to judge parents on!
How about if their child is loved, fed properly, played with etc.

I would rather a parent spent time engaging with their child than ironing.

Delatron · 25/07/2019 14:09

Exactly steppermum what a pathetic thing to be judgy about....

I reckon about 70% of this thread don’t iron so if that’s reflective of real life you must spend all day judging people and their creased clothes.... or maybe they just don’t look that creased at all.
