Do you iron ALL of your DCs clothes?

Obviously I do the stuff that. Needs it like shirts etc, but I've never bothered with plain cotton t-shirts and jogging bottoms etc particularly as DS is only 18 months and gets them covered in all sorts.
However MIL was over yesterday babysitting and she's ironed all DSs tips because she "can't bear it when he's not turned out properly".
Is this overkill or am I just a slummy mummy?
Personally I'd rather play with him on my days off than sit ironing.

Shirts only here too, plus the odd dress for me. My DM used to iron everything in my house when she visited, to begin with I was cross and embarrassed but after a few years I realised it was just her and gave her pleasure. My choice is generally not to iron. My DS is just mastering shirt ironing for 6th form. DM is now too frail to iron anything, and now I wish she still could.

taylorowmu · 24/07/2019 08:35

I bought some t shirts from next recently that I have to iron because they are that nasty cheap material with horizontal lines in it. They just shrink in the dryer. I'm so annoyed at myself for buying them. Even ASDA T-shirts are better quality these days.

Apart from that I rarely iron.

iVampire · 24/07/2019 08:36

I don’t iron anything

CountingDownToBedtime · 24/07/2019 08:39

My Mum irons everything, even her knickers!!I only iron DD,s school shirts & skirts, anything else goes in the dryer & folded.I hate ironing with a passion. My Mum spends hours on a Sunday night ironing.I just tell her, sorry I,ve got a life😉.

mogtheexcellent · 24/07/2019 08:40

I never iron. Dry clothes hanging up and theres minimal creases.

Im not entirely sure where our iron is tbh. I wouldnt have bought one but it was a wedding gift.

80sMum · 24/07/2019 08:40

My DCs are adults now, but when they were children I used to iron the minimum I could get away with! Basically that meant I ironed their school uniforms and very little else. My pet hate was cotton cargo trousers with multiple pockets - almost impossible to iron!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/07/2019 08:42

Yes, hate creased clothing and despite what people say you can tell when someone doesn’t iron.

Munder · 24/07/2019 08:42

No ironing happens in my house

anothernotherone · 24/07/2019 08:46

Ironing a baby or toddler's 0lay clothes is just busywork. There is no point. Sheer net curtain twitching, thin lipped, pear clutchy what-will-the-neighbors-sayery.

Some things look better ironed but an 18 month old's joggers and t shirt? Really? Who's benefit would you be ironing them for exactly? Certainly not the child's!

anothernotherone · 24/07/2019 08:48

IceCreamAndCandyfloss perhaps, but who on earth cares? Anyone who judges unironed play clothes on a toddler has their priorities so wrong they wouldn't be worth sparing a thought for.

sneakypinky · 24/07/2019 08:49

I don't own an iron.

mistermagpie · 24/07/2019 08:54

I don't iron anything. Except very occasionally something like a linen dress or whatever. I have two boys and to be honest, even if cared about them having ironed clothes I would be wasting my time, they are either covered in mud or paint or food or something by the end of the day anyway! (They are 2 and 4)

I really don't understand people ironing tiny baby clothes or vests than nobody sees, but it doesn't affect me so as long as they are happy that's what matters.

80sMum · 24/07/2019 08:55

My Mum irons everything, even her knickers!!

That made me chuckle - and reminded me of someone. I remember being round at my friend's house while her mum was ironing. I had, of course, seen my own mum ironing, but this was fascinating and something that I had never witnessed before. My friend's mum ironed absolutely everything! I watched, incredulous, as she picked up socks, bras, knickers, towels - even dishcloths - from the laundry basket and painstakingly ironed them! Shock Confused Grin

mistermagpie · 24/07/2019 08:58

I agree though that people might be able to tell the difference but, so what? If someone is standing there going 'ooh look, that two year olds shorts are a bit creased' they probably need to get out more.

Jellycat1 · 24/07/2019 08:59

Absolutely nothing except smart shirts and school uniform.

Oldraver · 24/07/2019 09:00

I iron some, probably more than than most MNers, going by the threads that pop up

AudacityOfHope · 24/07/2019 09:01

I only iron school uniforms...

MustardScreams · 24/07/2019 09:01

The last thing I ironed was a dress for a wedding I went to last June. I’m a fan of the ‘hot hairdryer on bad creases’ way of looking smart. Works a treat!

I tumble dry and fold when warm/hang up so there’s very little ironing needed.

LoafOfSellotape · 24/07/2019 09:03

I very rarely iron anything. I fold from the drier or if I've pegged out I hang carefully on coat hangers.

Longtalljosie · 24/07/2019 09:04

Ah, ironing as control. Common but misunderstood as help by people who don’t have to put up with it...

WhamBamThankyouHam · 24/07/2019 09:05

Yep, all of them - even down to his socks and pants Grin I'd love to take the more relaxed approach but it's just not Me!

AppleKatie · 24/07/2019 09:06

Uniforms, work shirts and special occasion outfits only.

You may be able to tell. I care not a jot. I refuse to buy into the faux moral superiority of ironing. Women’s work at its finest.

Oh and my DH does 99% of all ironing in this house.

I refuse to see unironed clothes as a reflection on me.

Livpool · 24/07/2019 09:06

My DS is 3 and we iron all his clothes.

I have never noticed other children (or indeed adults) though. Everyone has things they prioritise over others.

Your MIL was wrong though

merlotqueen · 24/07/2019 09:06

I don't iron, low spin, take from machine immediately onto a hanger onto the line.

DP irons his own stuff, work shirts etc.
