Where is he going for days on end?

I live on a new build estate, right on the edge near the sales office. We're used to loads of construction traffic and delivery vans going about their business.

Over the last couple of months, a furniture company van has been parked outside my kitchen window, next to the sales office. The road it's on is partly blocked-off at the moment because of various construction that's happening, and it's always parked in the closed-off bit.

When it appears, it stays. For days. Sometimes over a weekend, sometimes part of the week. Then, it'll disappear again and won't return until the following week, when the same thing happens.

I've only seen the driver himself once or twice, he got out last night with a big rucksack and merrily disappeared off through the woods near our house.

It's a total mystery. I've literally seen him twice in the five or six weeks he's been doing this.

My current (imaginary) backstory for this weird appearing/disappearing furniture van/man is that he's been caught-out with his fancy woman and thrown out on his ear, but has no where to stay so sleeps out of his work van. No one knows about this, and he's trying to keep up the pretence at work that everything's normal, all while also trying to keep his fancy woman happy. But that doesn't quite work because if he can stay at hers, why park his van in such a weird place?

Oh wise MNers - there has to be an explanation! Who is he? And more importantly - where is he going for days on end while his furniture van sits there unattended?! It's got to be something really interesting, right?

Is he a serial killer disposing of body parts bit by bit in his rucksack, cheery grin on his face? (Or do I watch too many horror films?!)

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 23/07/2019 21:08

Oooh - random bin bags do keep appearing around the estate (the FB group is raging) and I saw one next to the path really far into the woods, which I thought was a super weird place to take your rubbish and leave it Hmm

Where do the woods lead to? Is he heading through to his house but the vans to big for his street? Is he wild camping/fishing?

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 23/07/2019 21:17

The woods just lead to more houses out the other side, so I thought maybe whoever he's visiting lives out that way.

Is it too weird crazy to sneakily attach a tracking device to his back pack like on CSI or something?

At a tangent, but my lovely neighbour asked me if we had a gas problem as British Gas were parked outside our house daily, weeks on end. Turned out Mrs Next Door (mother of 6) had made a new friend who popped round during school times.

sproutsandparsnips · 23/07/2019 21:42

Is it marketing? By us, vans park on a bridge above a motorway with big slogans on to advertise.

Bookworm4 · 23/07/2019 21:52

I think it’s definitely the van is too big for outside his house.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 23/07/2019 22:26

If it's marketing, he's picked a really crap spot.

Maybe it's his fancy woman's house the van doesn't fit outside... so desperate for an interesting story here

Nah, it’s probably really boring. I have a campervan and a car and live on an estate where I can only have one residents’ parking permit. When I take my camper out I have to find somewhere outside of the permit zone to park it when I get back and there are three or four particular streets where I usually get lucky with a space (and the lucky people who live there therefore get to see it outside their house for a few days until I move it again.) I expect people wonder who the woman is who randomly parks this camper there and then scuttles off, then it disappears for a few days and then comes back again randomly for a bit a week or so later.

Mollypolly2610 · 23/07/2019 23:44

Check if he looks like Dexter

EileenAlanna · 24/07/2019 00:00

I'd say what you've got there is the leader of an alien expeditionary force carrying his intergalactic communication equipment to a secluded spot to update the mothership. He probably needs a really big rucksack to stow his full-body human suit while he kicks back & relaxes for a bit with his own species as we probably look gross to them.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 24/07/2019 00:02

Molly he doesn't look like Dexter. Much more middle-age spread and grey hair.

Eileen That has to be it! In the words of Arnold Rimmer - ALIENS!

Just print off- police aware notices and stick them all over. I do this on a van that get parked for advertising near my house and the next one. They haven't done it since (it was for a garage and I put- assume broken down and abandoned- police made aware)

Bookworm4 · 24/07/2019 12:29

Police aware signs? That’s for breakdowns/abandoned vehicles waiting to be lifted. He’s not doing anything wrong! Jesus this is a weird place, seems to be full of head girl telltales🙄

0rion · 24/07/2019 13:14

Yup a bushcrafter on a cheeky stealth camp. Go into the woods and look for evidence of camp fires, lean to shelters made from branches, etc.

ContactLight · 24/07/2019 13:19

His neighbours have complained about him parking such a large vehicle in their road as it is causing parking issues, so he is leaving it in your road instead.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 24/07/2019 15:18

Oh I doesn't bother me that he's there, I'm just really intrigued as to what his story is and it's frowned upon to leap out at someone from behind their van and ask them their life story just for closure

OP posts:
ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 26/07/2019 18:44

He's back!

Trouble is, they're now closing the road around him as we speak, so his van's going no where... Shock

Does he camp in the woods?
