What do I do with this cheque?

My son has been lucky enough to receive a financial award to go towards the cost of him competing in his sport. The cheque has come on his name, he is only 9 and the bank account he has doesnt allow withdrawals untill he is 16. Any ideas how to get access to this money so I can spend it on his sport in his behalf? The organisation that sent it took over 9 months to send it kn the first place so I dont really want to ask them to change it because that would just delay everything even further.

Easiest thing would be to set up a new bank account that allows for withdrawal.

Could you open up another bank account/savings account that will allow withdrawals.

Moneysavingexpert advice on children's accounts

Suggests HSBC paying 3% interest on upto £3k with withdrawals allowed, but some other suggestions in case other banks are easier to get to (if you actually have to visit a branch, rather than do things online/by post/using Post Office).

Congrats to your DS, it sounds like a bit of an achievement.

Speak to the bank. See if they can advise you. Take your passport as your i.d. with you and your son's birth cert as proof that he is your son if you go to the bank in person.

No one is calling you a fraud it's just a suggestion.

Of course, once the cheque has been deposited into an account, there is nothing to stop you transferring the money to one of your accounts to make it easier to spend, eg if childrens accounts don't allow bank transfers, debit card payments or come with a cheque book if payment by cheque is required.

I would open a new account that did allow withdrawals or transfers. I think that would be the easiest option.

Either that or cancel the cheque Wink

just pay it into yours- chances are they won't check it
