Where can I get a child size hiking backpack?

DS1 (9) is off with his Cub pack and needs a backpack that he can carry his sleeping bag and camping mat in, in addition to all his clothing.

Where can I get a child size one from?

I can only find backpacks suitable for an adult, at 125L (and to be honest that’s kind of meaningless to me), which just look way too big and that he would topple over carrying one of those.

We got DSs from Decathlon, he is 7 but a big 7 and loves it. It also has an internal water bladder so he can remain hydrated.

You surely can't mean 125l - that's about twice the size of the one DDhad for DofE?

Your best bet is to go to go outdoors or another large store and test some out, they will have all sizes from 10L upwards. My DH only takes a 75L one for a week's holiday. The camping mat can be attached to the outside so won't need to fit inside he rucksack.

I would think you could fit the cub in a 125l backpack!! I would go to go outdoors as they have some cheaper ones in lots of different sizes. Depending on how bulky his sleeping bag is, a 30l pack should be ok.

Given that a litre of water weighs a kilogram, and humans are only just buoyant, you could probably fit half the cub pack in it! (we did calculate, as one does, that DDs 65l rucksack was bigger than she wasGrin)

Have a look in places like Mountain Warehouse, Black's or Millett's - they'll have loads.

You can buy them sized for women (shorter back length) not sure about kids

We got ours from Regatta, at an outlet.

Thanks all. I’ll check out the suggestions.

I do actually have a 125L one and it is enormous! I could probably carry DS1 in it!

When looking on the internet I do have difficult visualising how much stuff you can get in bags when looking at how many litres they hold.

Practically every scout in my children's group brings their sleeping bag and roll mat separately from their rucksack. Most of them carry bedding in a big plastic carrier bag, with their rucksack on their back (so they can still carry everything at once).

It's really hard to pack for a week's camp if you try and get everything inside. Especially when they are asked to bring trainers, spare trainers, walking boots and wellies ...!
