What do you do with pesto?

I often see pesto pasta described as a really quick and simple meal, but how do you make it? Do you literally just stir a spoonful of pesto through cooked pasta and call it done? My 1yr old adores pasta so I'm always on the lookout for new pasta meals he can try when we have a meal he can't have.

Boil pasta add handful peas/sweet corn
Drain
Stir through pesto
Add handful grated cheese
Serve

For a very simple meal, yes you can. I also sometimes put it on chicken breasts before they go in the oven.

Firsttimekittenowner · 22/07/2019 17:23

You can also put it on toast or pizza

Delicious in a goats cheese sandwich.

Stir through pasta
On top of chicken breasts and bake the chicken
On a roast chicken or under the skin on a roast chicken
Mixed into mayonnaise and used as a dippy sauce or spread on a butty
Spread on sourdough toast, top with minced tomatoes = a sort of bruschetta
Blobs in a wrap with some sort of salad and squidgy cheese

On top of salmon.

Stir into pasta with black olives, peas, sweet corn, rocket, pine nuts, cheese.

Love cold pesto pasta salad with spinach, tomatoes, onions, roasted pine nuts etc. Whatever you want really.

I do pesto on toast with mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes, this is especially lovely with toasted baguette.

Lovely on pizza, just drizzle some over after pizza has cooked.

I use in on warm pasta with mushrooms and sweetcorn too.

I also like it with soft cheese for a nice dip with some bread sticks.

Also if I'm making breadcrumbs for a savoury topping I sometimes add a spoonful...

I love pesto!!

Yeah just pesto and pasta works but
I prefer to fry bacon, onions and mushrooms, add cream cheese and pesto, maybe some spinach if I have any and then stir the cooked pasta into that... still doesn’t take any longer than boiling the pasta...

Lindormilk · 22/07/2019 17:32

Yep, boil pasta, add chicken, stir in pesto.

queenofmycastlex · 22/07/2019 17:41

My LO loves pesto pasta! Made as described by pp but for when we make it for ourselves we stir in the pesto to cooked pasta, on the hob to heat it and also add a packet of halved cherry tomatoes and pre-cooked plain chicken (like the stuff you would use in sandwiches). One of my fave quick meals! Just heat until the tomatoes are warmed.

spiderlight · 22/07/2019 17:45

My DH puts it in porridge, of all things!

FurrySlipperBoots · 22/07/2019 17:50

My favourite meal ever is green tagliatelle with peas and far too much pesto stirred in.

If your little one is fussy about greens a handful of spinach can be blended in with the pesto and they won't even know!

Sabich · 22/07/2019 17:51

Porridge???!!!!

Saucery · 22/07/2019 17:52

Put on top of tuna steaks.

DontCallMeShitley · 22/07/2019 17:53

Leave it in the shop, it is foul.

Fibbke · 22/07/2019 17:53

Mary berrys express bacon pesto pasta

titchy · 22/07/2019 17:58

Only a tablespoon - I'd add half a jar Grin

fatfluffycushion · 22/07/2019 18:09

Chicken pesto
Cook pieces of chicken in a wok ( or fry pan )
Boil long pasta - tagliatelle, spaghetti or such
Once cooked Mix chicken with pesto then mix with pasta
Mix in plenty of halves of cherry tomato & basil leaves and top with Parmesan shavings
Enjoy

fatfluffycushion · 22/07/2019 18:10

Sorry I should have added mix in a generous measure of pine nuts too

popehilarious · 22/07/2019 18:13

Can mix it with cream or creme fraiche for a sauce for chicken.

I love the grilled aubergine pesto, with pine nuts, pasta, bacon, mushrooms, peas and onions.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 22/07/2019 18:15

Boil pasta, add peas/sweet corn, add pesto, done! Lovely

popehilarious · 22/07/2019 18:16

Sorry to be that mn mum but pesto is fairly salty for a baby so I'd use it sparingly. There's a great recipe on bbcgoodfood for pasta sauce with "hidden veg". i make a batch and freeze it in small portions for my small dc, it lasts ages and they have it every week at least.

Pesto is the food of the gods!

I'm just here for the recipes 😊

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/07/2019 18:21

Pesto mash is delicious, we especially like it with roast chicken thighs

Delia also did pesto mash as a stuffing for fresh mackerel, which is lovely

Stir it into tomato soup too
