Unpaid leave?

NC because at the very least my location is easily identifiable! I work in a shopping centre that has had a major fire today, likely to be closed for a while. Employer is trying to organise temporary transfers to other stores, however the company is notorious for taking the piss being a bit difficult when it comes to staffing and I'm concerned that I could end up being asked to do unsuitable hours, especially with it being the summer holidays. I'm luckily in a position where I can afford to take some unpaid leave, at least until DC are back at school, if my 'home' store is closed that long. Does it matter that I still have annual leave? I'd rather take unpaid than use all of my holiday now!
Maybe they'll surprise me and offer hours similar to my usual, in which case I could do them, but if not, where do I stand with asking for unpaid leave?

Could you take it as parental leave if you have school aged kids?

I hadn't even considered that, thanks Scratchy! It's been quite a day...
