What refurished iPhone for fairly elderly dad?

My dad’s had an ancient £30 phone for years and we think it’s be sensible to upgrade him to an iPhone.

I have an SE which is fine - is that the minimum spec it’s worth getting now? We don’t need any more functionality than the 5/5S offers but will that range be completely defunct in a year or two?!

I wa planning on getting a refurbed one from Argos/Amazon or similar and then a GiffGaff SIM. (It had to use the O2 network as that’s the only one that gets reception where they live.) I think we can get one for £6 a month, but whether that would be cheaper than putting him on PAYG I don’t know. He currently tops up about £10 every two years 😂

Would he be best with a plus (say a 7plus) for the larger size of screen?

H Pepsi - I did ask him if he wanted one of the biggest ones but he said it was “just more to break” 😁...

I think anything bigger than the SE and he’d find it a bit ridiculous, tbh, and would find even more excuses to leave it at home.
