Cracked iPhone XS Max please HELP!!!

My DD has dropped her iPhone X and cracked the screen (despite my saying she should have put it in a case and have a screen protector Hmm). Apple have quoted £326.44 Shock to replace it.

My question is, can anyone recommend a screen replacement service, please? I know it will invalidate the warranty.

Many thanks.

There are loads of local ones to me that will do it cheaper, however I had one that wasn’t an Apple screen but a cheaper version and it’s shit!! It’s dark and touch isn’t great on it, so I would ask for recommendations before you use anyone (I see loads of people on my local fb page asking for recommendations)

That’s what phone insurance is for!

Is it an X or an XS Max? I have the latter, I wouldn't risk an unofficial repair, the screen basically is the phone and the replacements are usually dark and less responsive. She'll struggle with Touch ID etc now that it's all through the screen.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 21/07/2019 11:33

Check your home contents insurance to see if you have accidental damage cover. It's a bit tricky about what classes as claimable but I do know that it falling out of a back pocket and not your hand counted for us (they said if I had been holding it, they might not have paid out)
It's cost me £100 excess and it was done by a proper Apple repairer.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 21/07/2019 11:34

A cheap replacement won’t be anywhere near the same quality. It sucks but Apple are the best option

Rockbird · 21/07/2019 11:38

Me too. Have never broken a screen in 12 years of iPhone ownership. I'm gutted. Sad Have asked around and they're all in the high £200s. Luckily my crack is in the bottom corner so I'm going to wait till it spreads before I get it replaced.

Rockbird · 21/07/2019 11:38

XS Max here too I mean.

taylorowmu · 21/07/2019 11:47

I wouldn't let anyone other than apple touch it tbh. It's not worth the risk.

TreacherousPissFlap · 21/07/2019 13:55

I realise it's no use to you now, but I'm assuming you pay the contract?

If that's the case the a glass screen protector and decent case is non-negotiable. DS has our old phones (so only a couple of years old) but is only allowed them on the understanding they have them fitted. Otherwise he can go back to his old 5S.
If you don't pay the contract then it's up to your DD, her problem not yours Smile

SteadyAreYouReady · 21/07/2019 13:59

Where did you get the quote? I’ve always had mine done free with goodwill

taylorowmu · 21/07/2019 13:59

I was assuming the DD was an adult, otherwise just telling her DC to put a protector on it would t be enough? Surely the responsibility would lie with OP to make sure the >£1k phone was protected.

IloveJudgeJudy · 27/07/2019 20:08

Hi, all. Apologies for not getting back sooner. Thank you for all your comments. Yes, DD is an adult and it is on her head to replace the screen. She's hopeful that she'll get a bonus, so that will have to go on a replacement screen! In the meantime she's put a screen protector on to stop the glass shards hurting her fingers. I just can't believe she didn't protect it in the first place.

IloveJudgeJudy · 27/07/2019 20:13

@Rockbird Yes, DD too. It is an XS Max. She's really upset, but perhaps she'll listen to me now and realise I do talk sense sometimes. Well, I can hope.

I feel your pain. I dropped my iPhone 6s a few years ago at work and, despite having a screen and back protector, my screen still shattered.

I can’t recommend We Fix enough they are nationwide mobile repairers that come to you.
I sat on my IPad - which was barely 6 months old - and badly cracked the screen. I can’t remember now how much I paid to get it replaced but it was definitely much cheaper than Apple and no more expensive than a local repairer who wanted me to take my iPad into the shop and leave it there until at least the next day. What I paid WeFix was worth every penny for the convenience and speed of repair
I made the appointment on line and the technician came to me and did the repair in his van on my drive,
At the time there wasn’t a bad review for them on the website and I was sceptical that they would be as good as everyone said. They definitely were and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. They definitely repair IPhone screens, Sorry I can’t do links but if you google WeFix you’ll find them.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 27/07/2019 22:02

@IloveJudgeJudy did you check your home insurance to see if it's repair is covered?

6demandingchildren · 27/07/2019 22:40

I work in the phone industry and we would advise the authorised apple repair, as if a bit of glass has cut through a connecting ribbon they will sort it and they obviously use genuine apple products, if anyone else says they are genuine products then unless it's a refurbished part they are lying to you as apple do not sell parts.

iSmash are fab.
