Help Needed - D&V on holiday

Name changer here. DP and I are currently on holiday and due to fly home in 9 hours. European country, standard big resort with buffet food. We’ve been here a few days and not left the resort and only eaten their food. Around 12 hours ago he started getting severe stomach cramps that deteriorated into D&V around 6 hours ago. DP went to the pool toilets and saw that 2 other guests had also been sick. I told the hotel and they said that they had a few guests being ill but one had gone to the medical centre and it was a general gastro bug not food poisoning Hmm

I’ve tried to keep DP drinking fluids and rehydration salts but he’s been sick 4 times now and is in a huge amount of pain.

What else can I do? Is there any way we can still fly home today? We booked independetly so no rep to help.

Oh poor you - that is awful

No you can't fly home today. Phone your travel insurance company (now if they're open) and ask what to do.

Make sure you both keep washing your hands properly and tie something around your face because the virus is airborne and you could breathe it in.

Bearing in mind you're sharing a small space, be prepared to be next.

Thanks Lemon, I didn’t think so and I’m usually the first to judge others going out and about when ill. It’s a bit of a disaster for us as we are both due back at work for meetings on Monday. If it is a general gastro thing and not food poisoning, would I not have it already as well? We have both just spent the last few days by the pool together and eating similar things

Just to add, DP has had a bit of an of an off tummy for a few weeks - not quite right after work travel to Asia a month ago (GP said it was probably nothing to worry about) and then a period of intense stress. This was supposed to be a few days of rest and recharging Sad

Is there a hotel doctor? I had a bout of D&V on holiday and the doctor gave me an injection and it really eased it so I could travel, but it was probably 24 hours before our departure. I would recommend staying put for 24h-48hrs, i know it feels really stressful missing the meetings but you know in reality these things happen and it won't be the end of the world. By the way my DH didn't get the bug so hopefully you won't either.

Of course you can fly home if you want to.

I would.

Depends on how much he is chucking up/going to the loo as to whether it's logistical or not.

I'll get flamed for this but it's what I would do. I had a flight home from Turkey once where the queue was down the aisle for everyone with DV.

Go to hospital and get an anti nausea shot and take a lot of immodium

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 21/07/2019 05:46

If it is a gastro bug then the last thing you want to do is spread it to everyone on the plane as well! That would be unbelievably selfish. I appreciate you're supposed to be back at work but I think you just need to suck it up and wait until he's recovered. Definitely see a doctor, and call your insurers about changing your flights.

Thanks all. The hotel sorted out a doctor for us and DP has just had the injection for nausea and a paracetamol injection for the stomach cramps. The doctor said he should be ok to fly and left some Imodium in case. We are both too exhausted to think so going to sleep for a couple of hours and then do some phoning around
