It is illegal to film someone on a beach without their consent?

Have NC. This is a weird one but it's bugging me.

I sometimes look at an instagram account that has around 120k followers. This person is a somewhat public figure albeit very minor.

They are currently on holiday and they have twice posted footage of fellow holidaymakers on the beach. The footage is obviously supposed to be mocking their appearance. The last one was a video of a middle aged man in tight swim shorts. The footage lasts maybe 10 seconds or so and was accompanied by a shocked/bemused emoji face.

Is this legal? It's such a horrid thing to do to someone. I'm baffled about the motivation behind it.

Anyone know if this is legal? TIA

It's a nasty thing to do but perfectly legal in England afaik

Which country are they doing it in, you'd need to find out the laws there

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:30

They are in Greece, I think...

A really horrid thing to do. Who was the lady in the US who lost her career through body shaming a lady in the gym?!

TanMateix · 20/07/2019 22:31

Honestly, as long as it doesn’t go viral, it is not an issue. It is not on but it is not ilegal.

YeOldeTrout · 20/07/2019 22:32

imho it's fine & should continue to be perfectly legal, but not without limits. I don't like very long length powerful lenses filming people from half a mile away, for instance.

Also fine in the streets & other public places.

namechangedtohelpyou · 20/07/2019 22:32

I remember that gym incident. Can't remember her name. Awful thing to do but don't think the filming is illegal. Not sure about the posting online bit for everyone to laugh at.

Tavannach · 20/07/2019 22:35

It's legal in this country if it's a public place.

I'd add a comment to that effect.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 20/07/2019 22:35

In the UK it would be legal, and I'd be extremely surprised if Greece had tighter laws. In public you have no expectation of privacy, and thus someone filming you is not violating it.

It's an arsehole thing to do, but most arseholery is perfectly legal.

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:36

Yes. I suppose that's what I should have asked. Knowing they have 120k, is it still legal for this person to upload footage designed to ridicule a stranger?

No idea about the legality, but I think I’ve also seen the post you are referring to and thought it was very mean. The guy is just apparently going about his business and being ridiculed for cheap laughs. I’ve seen the same person do this a couple of times lately, although they also do it to friends it appears so I did wonder if they actually know the person they are mocking for “banter”. It has put me off them though.

Blubluboo · 20/07/2019 22:37

I think it is morally wrong. I can't imagine someone doing this if they only had 30 followers for example. Their life must be pretty sad to be posting something horrible about someone else knowing they have a following of 120k. They are only doing it for likes and to make themselves feel better. I'd be absolutely gutted if someone did this to me.
They'd be the first to complain about trolls speaking bad about them.

Binforky · 20/07/2019 22:38

Its legal even though it's a horrible thing to do. The lady at the gym was different as she was in the changing room and I think naked in the shower as far as I can remember.

Bringonspring · 20/07/2019 22:38

I don’t think it’s illegal but there’s a big backlash against body shaming at the moment so I’d be surprised if it didn’t harm their career.

Although some Z celebrities seek to make a career out of being vile.

Any clues for who it is?

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:39

HariboHippo Are their initials JR?

Yes it is legal to mock strangers on the internet. This is why bullying and harassment on social media is still so rife because there is no legislation against it.

isabellerossignol · 20/07/2019 22:39

A really horrid thing to do. Who was the lady in the US who lost her career through body shaming a lady in the gym?!

I don't know her name but I think her 'career' was as a playboy model, so maybe it did her a favour.

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:39

Can I name them here?

OP posts:
isabellerossignol · 20/07/2019 22:40

Although to clarify, I think mocking other people's bodies is reprehensible behaviour.

progestermoan · 20/07/2019 22:41

Yes legal but sounds morally wrong

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:41

I too would be so upset if this happened to me or someone I loved.
I was surprised to see this person do it. They had always seemed fairly decent. (I only occasionally look at their account to see how the other half are living!)

OP posts:
HariboHippo · 20/07/2019 22:42

Yes! I’ve just watched it again and still can’t work out if they know each other or it is just a mean spirited shaming of a stranger.

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:43

It seemed really odd didn't it Haribo? Not like the other stuff I've seen from this person...

OP posts:
Blubluboo · 20/07/2019 22:43

Dying to work out who it is... can you give another clue?

namechangedtohelpyou · 20/07/2019 22:44

I kinda want to know who this is too...

Imighthavegotthiswrong · 20/07/2019 22:44

Could I just name them on here? Is that permissible?
