How long did your smear test results take?

Nearly a month and no results. Does this have any significance? (i.e. if it takes longer, is there more likely to be atypicality?). TIA

Two weeks here, but the nurse said anything up to six weeks is normal. Usually they tell you faster if they find something. Maybe ask at the doctor's how long the wait is at the moment?

MuddledUpAgain · 20/07/2019 21:38

I had one recently and was told that there's a delay processing them due to staff cuts. Was warned it could take up to 2 months!

Biglumpycustard · 20/07/2019 21:40

I was told it takes upto 5 weeks now. I had my smear on the 11th of June and just had my results in post today.

I’d youre in a massive region of the North they’re currently taking 9-12 weeks. Leeds specifically.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 20/07/2019 21:47

Mine came today had it done 1st June

NoSauce · 20/07/2019 21:48

A week.
I’m no expert but I would think that no news is good news. Have you rang to chase them up OP?

TeenagersandFurbabies · 20/07/2019 21:48

Mine took a week, had my smear on the 8th July & got my results letter on the 15th July.

ShyShyShyDelilah · 20/07/2019 21:49

Ah, thanks all. Sounds like it could be a while longer then. That's good, I'll stop wondering!

I had mine 3rd June and only got my results today

Bunnyhop1502 · 20/07/2019 21:53

I’ve just had mine after a month of waiting. I have previously had a worrying result which came through within days.

Skinnychip · 20/07/2019 21:56

I went in june and nurse told me not to expect any results until at least september

unsure111 · 20/07/2019 21:59

I had mine in may and was told there is a 2 month wait as there's so many more to process now.

OurChristmasMiracle · 20/07/2019 22:00

Had mine this morning. Was told 2/3 weeks for results

meangirlsonrain · 20/07/2019 22:01

Had mine in April waited nearly 9 weeks for results.

Nacreous · 20/07/2019 22:02

Mine took 6 weeks to come back. Had low grade changes but nothing they were worried about. Hopefully all okay OP!

MotherofaCat · 20/07/2019 22:03

Mine was about 3 weeks later. Was told it could take up to 6 weeks though.

polkadotpixie · 20/07/2019 22:07

Mine took 9 weeks

ShivD · 20/07/2019 22:07

My just recent one ( May) took about 4 weeks.

stucknoue · 20/07/2019 22:08

4-6 weeks for all clear, they get back to you quicker if there's a problem I was told

MissChananderlerbong · 20/07/2019 22:23

I got a letter within 2 weeks, all clear.

Tutlefru · 20/07/2019 22:24

I think some counties are currently suffering massive delays in results. I had mine done at the end of May, she said people are waiting up to 12 weeks! Still haven’t had mine so I’m hoping no news means good news!

LIZS · 20/07/2019 22:28

11 weeks ish. There was a thread and we kept tabs, a lot were well over 6 weeks due to the campaign earlier this year.

notangelinajolie · 20/07/2019 22:29

I was told no news is good news and my GP would be in touch if there was a problem. Smear was months ago so I guess I'm in the clear Smile

keepingbees · 20/07/2019 22:34

I've just had mine back, I had it done over 6 weeks ago. Results were normal. The nurse warned me it would take about 4 weeks which surprised me as it has never been longer than 2 weeks every other time.
I agree no news is probably good news.

BelaLug0si · 20/07/2019 22:42

Unfortunately you do not hear quicker if the results are abnormal. The sample has to be looked at under the microscope to assess for abnormalities. We can't tell until we look at them that they're abnormal.
There is a national shortage of laboratory screening staff due to reorganisation happening from July 2019 - March 2020 which means 40 labs will close, leaving only 9. Many staff are leaving because they can't travel to the new lab and / or don't know if they'll have a job in the future.
I'm afraid this means people are still having to wait for their results.

Ring your practice and ask them what the turnaround time is at your (current) local lab.

You should always get a result letter (if you're in the UK). Please contact your GP to get your result - unfortunately you can't assume that no news is good news, sorry. There were widely reported problems with the Capita delivery of result letters.
