I've bought the Java edition and have had it working on my machine before, so I know I have at least the min spec.

I can open the launcher and click Play, it thinks about it for a bit and then says the game has crashed. Has a button to view the log but it's greyed out, so I've no error code or anything to Google.

I've tried:

Uninstalling Minecraft and Java, reinstalling both from scratch.

Updating graphics drivers, updating Windows, restarting about a million times

Removing Bitdefender antivirus which is apparently now not compatible

Googling for solutions (I found the above suggestions)

Swearing profusely

How the hell can I play this game I've paid for? Please help!

Is your router for some reason blocking the game? (Happened to our Xbox once)

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 20/07/2019 19:22

Ok thanks that's a good guess, I've actually got a different router since the last time I successfully played it many many months ago.

How do I make the router let me play?

Google seems to think I need to do stuff to my router if I am running a server, I'm not sure what that even means I'm just trying to play the vanilla, single player game or indeed any bloody version of the game at all.

Have you tried running it as administrator?

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 20/07/2019 20:13

How do I do that?

There's only me using this machine, I assumed my login had admin privileges. It does say Administrator under my name if I go to settings, and there's no separate Admin username listed.

Should I phone Virgin broadband support to ask if my router could be blocking the game?

My Dd had this problem. You need to go into Task Manager and close one program down. She found it on YouTube after having the same issue. She isn't here for me to ask at the moment.

KnifeAngel · 20/07/2019 21:22

I have just text her she said you go into Task manager and close the second Minecraft on task manager then end task once it comes up not responding.

Also go into Control panel- programmes- premier opinion and uninstall that.

Hers didn't work for months prior to this.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 20/07/2019 21:27

Thanks for the suggestion! I only have Microsoft Launcher listed in Task Manager, and I don't have Premier Opinion in my programmes list either :(

Oh no I hope you get it to work. Mojang aren't very helpful.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 20/07/2019 22:50

They're currently responding to help tickets from 28th May, apparently!

Please don't routinely log in to your PC using an admin account! It's safest to log in with a normal account with fewer privileges. Not helpful with Minecraft though, sorry!

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 20/07/2019 23:41

Is it? Never knew that, thanks! Will change it when I can find the energy to figure out how.

Have you tried creating a new windows profile on the machine and running it from there?

Alternatively uninstall it again and check program files to make sure all minecraft files have been deleted, sometimes it can leave behind rogue files which messes up future installs.

FixTheBone · 22/07/2019 07:36

What PC and what version of windows do you have?

If you're on a newish PC with windows 10, it takes about 30mins to create a reinstallation USB stick and another 30 to wipe and install windows completely, which is always tremendously therapeutic, and a good time to upgrade to an SSD if you dont already have one.
