Small changes you would like manufactures to make

I dont mean thing like less salt / sugar / fat in foods or a complete rethink of a design just little things that would make them better / easier to use.
For me it is ;
Cheese I wish it was produced in square blocks so that one or two slices would be enough to fill a round of bread instead of about eight narrow slices. Some supermarkets sell their own in larger blocks but they tend to be the size of a house brick and not strong enough taste for my liking .

Clam shell packing , just NO , stop using it its to bloody hard to open and we don't need more plastic in this world .

Resealable packing , not the zip-lock type but the ones that have sticky tags that are meant to keep to keep the pack closed - they just don't work , yes I know I can decant stuff into containers or buy them clippy things but they could also put more sticky stuff on the tag.

What would you like to see changed ?

Any thoughts anyone ?

All packaging must be easy to recycle, ban black plastic, phase out plastic bottles and put all drinks in cans or glass instead, far more compostable packaging for things like takeaway cartons.

Ban multipacks of cans. Supermarket tills can do the pricing for multibuys without using a layer of plastic to wrap into 3, 4, 6 etc.

Make far more sweetener free drinks available. Water flavoured with lemon, lime etc only.

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/07/2019 17:29

Rotary washing lines with a brake, so you can lock it as you peg out washing and then release it to rotate with the wind.

I live in a windy place, and hanging out the washing is taking my life in my hands, it's like hanging laundry on a helicopter.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/07/2019 17:37

Definitely get rid of as much flipping plastic as possible. I'm disgusted, outraged and alarmed that supermarkets still seem to be doing so little here.

I'd like to be able to buy packets of Jelly Babies (well, boxes!) with only green ones.

I'd also like to see shower gel that comes in a glass jar and is basically little bubble gum sized balls, one per shower.

And I'd like packaging of beauty products to be all old-fashioned and beautiful again - glass bottles, beautiful labels, instead of horrible, garishly coloured plastic with huge writing all over it.

And it ought to be possible by now to make a Brie that keeps itself cool and doesn't smell, so that I can have it in my packed lunch more often without a fridge.

growlingbear · 21/07/2019 17:40

Yes, less plastic. Waitrose - you don't need a big thick plastic moulded base and then a hard clear plastic lid to put your pears in.

TSSDNCOP · 21/07/2019 17:54

The supermarkets have to take a stand. Stop the plastic!

I want my chocolate wrapped in foil and paper again.

What if really love is refillables. Do you buy a bottle of Elvive say, but you take your bottle back to have it refilled from a vat with a tap.

Takeaway restaurants should be banned from using polystyrene boxes.

Elphame · 21/07/2019 18:22

Much less plastic and what there is to be 100% recyclable.

Ocean Spray Classic cranberrry juice to be sweetener free as it once was. Same for Schweppes tonic water

Chocolate to taste like chocolate again. I don't mind paying a little more for the quality of the ingredients to be as they once were.

stucknoue · 21/07/2019 18:29

To make maxi dresses 2 inches shorter. I'm 5'7, hardly short, but they are so long on me I trip on them.

Soola · 21/07/2019 18:32

Jelly Bean manufacturers -

Stop making the cinnamon ones.

Likewise with Revels -

Stop mailing the rain ones.

.....

Regarding the plastics comments, I give all of the excess packaging back to the supermarket or store once I’ve been through the till. No way am I taking it all home to sort and keep for a couple of weeks before it can go out on whatever day the council have said they’ll pick up.

Get rid of the packaging at source and they’ll soon think about reducing the amount of it.

Soola · 21/07/2019 18:33

mailing means making

If anyone mailed me a reason I’d kill them

Soola · 21/07/2019 18:33

Raisin even!

RebootYourEngine · 21/07/2019 18:34

Love the washing line break idea.

Absolutely agree about cutting down on plastic. My local supermarket insists on putting every bit of fruit into a plastic bag. The employees and customers complain about this but the company won't change their policy.

Ahl134 · 21/07/2019 18:35

A petrol lawnmower with a button to start it and not that ghastly pull chord that ends up taking your shoulder out it's socket every time you try to start it.

I have medium sized hands and always have problems working the pumps in petrol stations. Why are the pump handles so big?

Hotterthanahotthing · 21/07/2019 18:41

Make pocket in women's clothes usable not the tiny useless ones.Give us inside pockets in our jackets. And hoods that fit not just decorative.
You canndo it for men so why not for
women?

Corrag · 21/07/2019 18:41

Tampon packs to come with little paper bags for disposal of tampons, to encourage people not to flush them. One bag per tampon.

And while we're at it, ban scented sanitary towels.

Rainbowknickers · 21/07/2019 18:52

Soola my dad is a member of friends of the earth and read somewhere that German housewives where doing the same as you
Which put pressure on the supermarkets
Who put pressure on the manufacturers
Who in turn reduce the packaging

So he thought he’d take a stand,go with my mother to do the food shop and do the same

All went well (even though we had to guess how long to cook some foods but hey ho the planet comes first)

He got a bit (lot) carried away

Beanfeast-ripped the box off
Eggs-put then in his own cardboard box (rather than the plastic one)
Cereal-ripped off the box
Etc

Then he got to the bag of flour

My mother almost divorced him there and then

He had to do the walk of shame back out of the supermarket covered in flour

He still does it and just checks more carefully now!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 21/07/2019 18:54

Make yoghurts in packs of 7, or even 14.

4 or 6 is a stupid number.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/07/2019 18:55

Ban the words flushable on products that the water companies don't want us to flush.

Ban instructions that encourage food waste such as to 'freeze on day of purchase and use within one month' or to throw away half used jars of pickles and sauces within X weeks.

One for shops not manufacturers. Stop sales assistants from automatically offering a bag and continuing to push one when you've waved your reusable bag at them and said no thank you.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 21/07/2019 18:56

Make car headlight bulbs actually physically possible to change, without needing the hands of a newborn who has the strength of a navvy, with the dexterity of a surgeon.

SamBeckett · 21/07/2019 18:58

I agree with getting rid of plastic most fruit and veg can stand up not been wrapped in plastic as it is either washable or peelable , carrots spuds, peppers, oranges bananas etc soft fruit / berries do need some protection but cardboard or recyclable plastic ( if there is genuinely such a thing ) should do fine , we managed with cardboard boxes for mushrooms for a long time up until a few years ago and we had boxes of frozen veg not that long ago.

I am not so sure on how we would manage with meat , I know that some supermarkets say bring your own boxes but to remove all meat from the chillers and rely on the in house butchers would mean a huge ( but not impossible ) task of redesigning the shops and getting enough trained butchers to do the job. In fact my local Tescos has just removed the butcher and fishmonger counter, talk about taking a step backwards Hmm

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I will swap you my green ones for your black ones , any takers for the yellow ones ?
What would keep the shower gel in balls ? any kind of plastic will just add to the whole plastic issue .

@BarbaraofSeville Try them , www.sachetsandmore.com/produc2-x-bolero-variety-fruit-drink-sugar-free/t/1 . they taste a bit artificial but are good value for money and although are still in plastic its a lot less then it would be if you bought it all in plastic bottles .

@Zaphodsotherhead you have just got to be quick and learn to duck when a pair of soggy knickers comes whizzing round so you don't get hit in the mush by them Grin

@TSSDNCOP I second this , I want my chocolate wrapped in foil and paper again. better for the environment and I get to spend ages smoothing out the foil .

Put empty baskets and small chillers at the end of every aisle so those absolute boneheads who dump frozen peas next to the batteries, or fresh chicken in the soup aisle, can be lazy fuckers without actually wasting food needlessly.

nocoolnamesleft · 21/07/2019 19:02

God, yes, to the pockets one. Drives me insane. Give us decent pockets.

Mysterian · 21/07/2019 19:02

Make plugs that aren't bullies and will happily share an extension socket with others, rather than taking up all the room on their own.

Singleandproud · 21/07/2019 19:04

More female clothes with decent sized pockets.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/07/2019 19:04

Packaging to be with plastic or paper or cardboard or metal etc. I have yoghurt pits with cardboard glued to plastic, paper bags with plastic fronts, cardboard tubes with metal ends... If it was one or the other it would be a lot easier to recycle

Uk manufacturers and shops to get behind a deposit scheme for bottles. It's a minor adjustment for the consumer.
