Small changes you would like manufactures to make

I dont mean thing like less salt / sugar / fat in foods or a complete rethink of a design just little things that would make them better / easier to use.
For me it is ;
Cheese I wish it was produced in square blocks so that one or two slices would be enough to fill a round of bread instead of about eight narrow slices. Some supermarkets sell their own in larger blocks but they tend to be the size of a house brick and not strong enough taste for my liking .

Clam shell packing , just NO , stop using it its to bloody hard to open and we don't need more plastic in this world .

Resealable packing , not the zip-lock type but the ones that have sticky tags that are meant to keep to keep the pack closed - they just don't work , yes I know I can decant stuff into containers or buy them clippy things but they could also put more sticky stuff on the tag.

What would you like to see changed ?

Locks on ovens! Seems like a reasonable basic safety measure. I've bought the adhesive ones for our oven but my toddlers ripped them off in no time.

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 21/07/2019 20:10

Agree about car head lights, when the ones in mine needed changing we had to get a mechanic friend to do it as dh couldn't get his hands into the ridiculously small gap and I wasn't strong enough to undo the clips!

We has also in another car had to have the switch for the brake lights replaced, the switch itself cost a couple of quid but the only way to get to it was to dismantle the bottom half of the dashboard, cost nearly £150, why peugeot couldn't put some sort of hatch in or put it in a more accessible position??

hallamoo · 21/07/2019 20:13

Kids school uniform, polo shirt, shirts, cycle shorts etc. Stop making them in plastic packs and selling by age.

Every shop has a different idea of how big '7-8ys' is, and my DC need to try them on, so we have to take them out of the plastic packets, take all the tissue paper and cardboard off and try them on. If they don't fit, they're impossible to get back in the packets.

Why don't they just sell them loose or on the hanger like other clothes?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/07/2019 20:20

Milk - can't always get 1 pint portions, we both like different milks and we neither of us can get through a 2 Pinter in a couple of days

Milk lasts at least a week in the fridge and can also be frozen.

Ring pulls on all cans! Tin openers just don't last and trying to open tinned tuna is so messy

No thank you. It's impossible to drain ring pull tuna properly, the dry stuff inexplicably costs more and my ikea tin opener is about 15 years old and just fine.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/07/2019 20:36

I think my tin opener is older than my eldest child (who is 24).

SamBeckett · 21/07/2019 21:07

@PhDone that is a great Idea.
I am not sure if it is still in place but 10 or so years ago in Bulgaria the unemployed only got their version of our dole if the did work in the community, so cutting grass in parks , litter picking , keeping the beaches clean etc . They do not have to do anything if they dont want to but then they dont get any dole . the old ill or injured did not have to do any and they would still get dole money

@Tigger001 with a small amount of shopping I remove packaging as I put in my own material bags. I then give to the cashier to dispose of. No one has ever refused me.

With a large amount of shopping, I pay and then find a place to stand out of the way and then I go through the bags removing what I want.

I then either go to customer services and hand over the excess packaging or if there is a long queue I take the packaging to one of their bins. The latter means it all goes in with other waste but but the store will have to pay for their collections so if more people do it they will provide better facilities.

Trickyteens · 21/07/2019 22:47

Effective cooker hoods, reasonably priced. Porridge pots for people who hate sugar. Ie. 40g (NOT 27g-who even has that?) porridge and some dried milk.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2019 02:51

Or you could put 40 g of plain porridge oats and some dried milk into your own reusable tub.

Will take some working out to start with but once you've worked out what you need as in spoons of dried milk or what measures of oats you need - a small cup full or whatever, then it's no effort at all and far cheaper.

Porridge pots are not something we need more of.

Minesril · 22/07/2019 06:13

Food designed for three person families! So three portions of fish in a pack instead of two. We're not all perfect 2.4 families! Actually this would work for 5 person families too.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 22/07/2019 06:24

@BuzzShitbagBobbly yes!!! I hate those people and always tell them off if I see them do it. Asshats.

OhTheRoses · 22/07/2019 06:36

More shoes with removable insoles so I can insert my orthotics please.

sashh · 22/07/2019 06:48

Graphista

Have you heard of OLIO?It's about sharing food so it doesn't go to waste, including half loaves of bread.

When you buy anything that includes batteries eg a new TV the remote will have batteries, then these should be rechargeable. Yes it would cost more but not that much when you are buying a TV.

There should also be a bag in the packaging which is free post to send the non UK plugs/cables back.

Toy shops should have to have a certain % or toys that are not plastic. Years ago I got a wooden pull along dog for my niece, 10 years later it was still in good condition and passed on to younger siblings.

Somewhere you can take your own bottle and fill with whatever.

rslsys · 22/07/2019 07:02

There should be a universal base for all child car seats so that any seat can fit on any base.

LostInTheColonies · 22/07/2019 07:04

Just going to share a pic from our supermarket - very little produce is pre-wrapped. We're in NZ & all supermarkets are like this. Kids can pick up a free piece of fruit on the way in, too.
Whoever mentioned more buttons on blouses & shirts to stop the gaps - too right!
Make the text in the nutrition panels on food big enough to read without a fecking magnifying glass.

sashh · 22/07/2019 07:27

Oh not an invention but there should be a room in nurseries, creches where a nurse can perform a smear test. I know lots of women with small children find it difficult to attend for smears because they don't want to take their toddler.

Kids can pick up a free piece of fruit on the way in, too.

My local morrisons has started doing that.

BikeRunSki · 22/07/2019 07:36

I’d like more clothing manufacturers to make tops in “long”, as is fairly standard with trousers. I know some do, but it’s far from standard. My height is all in my torso.

Esspee · 22/07/2019 07:51

@IamtheOA I have a couple of M&S white business shirts which have exactly what you want. There are the usual number of buttons on display but two extra concealed buttons between those over the bust. Perfect!

Skinnychip · 22/07/2019 07:58

One for shops not manufacturers. Stop sales assistants from automatically offering a bag and continuing to push one when you've waved your reusable bag at them and said no thank you.

My sister works in a shop and one of the managers criticised one of her colleagues for saying "would you like a bag" because the customer would (apparently) be very offended not to be automatically given a bag 🙄

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 22/07/2019 08:08

I’m with everyone on the packaging issue of supermarket stuff.

When oh when will they get the message??

We are a family of 3 so I get the pre packaged quantity issue, but luckily my DS eats for England, so usually a pack of 4 does the trick!

Bravissimo or Pepperberry do great shirts for those of us with a larger than normal chest.

eurochick · 22/07/2019 08:10

More easily recyclable packaging and less plastic.

Make packets resealable so you don't have to use cling film or create additional washing up to keep your food fresh.

Remove artificial sweeteners from non diet versions of drinks.

UltimateIrritant · 22/07/2019 08:14

I want Cadbury's to return to straight edges and taste nice again
I want all clothing manufacturers to conform re sizing
I want to buy sliced bread in thin slices
Less packaging all round
Paper bags in fruit and veg aisle
Less multipacks

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 22/07/2019 08:14

@Soola I love your idea of handing back the plastic packaging. I have recently started collecting all our plastic packaging to take to a recycling bin, our council will only recycle plastic bottles and the amount of packaging I am left with is shocking! Two large bags for life full most weeks and I have to drive 15 mins to our nearest Sainsburys which has a mixed plastics recycling bin. I feel awful that I have been chucking this into the regular bin but also angry that there's no easier way to recycle it. Giving it back at source is a fantastic idea.

HippoRampage · 22/07/2019 08:39

Making toilet cubicles wider or redesigning sanitary bins so that i can actually have a wee without sitting awkwardly or touching the bin!

pantherpants · 22/07/2019 08:47

@SamBeckett get yourself a cheese slice. Changed my life. You slice the face of the cheese then.
