Small changes you would like manufactures to make

I dont mean thing like less salt / sugar / fat in foods or a complete rethink of a design just little things that would make them better / easier to use.
For me it is ;
Cheese I wish it was produced in square blocks so that one or two slices would be enough to fill a round of bread instead of about eight narrow slices. Some supermarkets sell their own in larger blocks but they tend to be the size of a house brick and not strong enough taste for my liking .

Clam shell packing , just NO , stop using it its to bloody hard to open and we don't need more plastic in this world .

Resealable packing , not the zip-lock type but the ones that have sticky tags that are meant to keep to keep the pack closed - they just don't work , yes I know I can decant stuff into containers or buy them clippy things but they could also put more sticky stuff on the tag.

What would you like to see changed ?

womble I agree re eye-level grills! Also, I can't see the point of big ranges where you have to bend down to get things out of the oven. My ideal combo would be a massive hob and a couple of built in ovens at about waist height. With a grill in one of them!

Saucepan lids! We have the ones where the knobs can be unscrewed and DH always unscrews them. I spend ages reuniting the various bits when they come out of the dishwasher. My next set of pans will have fixed knobs!

Anyway just stop wrapping cucumbers and the like in plastic

This one is interesting, cucumbers have really porus skin, and will go all manky and bendy in 24hours if they aren’t wrapped. It actually saves waste having wrapping on them.

It was on TV not long ago, but i forget what the program was.

Though I’m sure they could use something recycleable, though.

SamBeckett · 24/07/2019 21:43

@SlocombePooter , Why on earth does DH unscrew them?
tell him to leave his knobs alone Grin

Haha Sam yes he can't help himself, his reasoning is the knobs retain water, so unscrewing means they can be dried. I, on the other hand, couldn't care less!

Why am I stillfailing toopen corned beef with a bloody key. There has to be easier ways
Corn beef is absolutely evil. Thats probably the reason its under lock and key! 😂😂.

SlocombePooter · 25/07/2019 07:45

Lethal! I sliced my hand open on a corned beef tin years ago, never again. Also, I don't like ring pull cans. I must have feeble hands because I can never get them to open smoothly. Sardines are the worst, they splash everywhere. I have a really good can opener so would always prefer to use that.

Agree with loads of these suggestions.

Going back to reducing packaging I'd also like products to be packaged in a way so as not to be trying to fool customers into thinking they are bigger than they are. It's really annoying and so wasteful. I know it must work but if all producers and manufacturers stopped then surely they would all be on an even footing.
I shop at Waitrose and the excess packaging is ridiculous - I'm not stupid I can see what they are doing! Some of their meats are vac packed THEN put in cardboard boxes. They are so hypercritical with all their empty promises about wanting to be environmentally aware.

I have the same issue with mushrooms. I would buy the loose ones, but they often seem past their best in the shop and hardly last at home.

Surely it's not beyond the wit of manufacturers to come up with either an easily recyclable plastic packaging or something that protects short lived products like fruit, veg and perhaps even meat, fish, cheese etc but is compostable.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 25/07/2019 15:15

I see the need to wrap cucumbers but what I don't understand is why the wrapped cucumber is then placed in another plastic bag! Sainsburys do this and there's just no need for it

probstimeforanewname · 25/07/2019 15:31

Get rid of the plastic bits on tetrapaks. It was fine when you cut the corner off to pour, and you could fold them up afterwards for the bin (and they will be easier to recycle in the areas that recycle them).

Don't make things so difficult to open. I get that things need to be tamper-proof but I sometimes wonder if I will be able to open anything when I am an old lady!

SoupInTheLaundryBag · 25/07/2019 15:47

If manufacturers can't make recyclable coffee pods then please make the recycle points for them a lot more accessible. There is nothing for 30 miles near me.

SummerSeasoning · 25/07/2019 16:20

They are mixed materials so difficult to recycle. There are compostable ones available online I believe.

SummerSeasoning · 25/07/2019 16:23

I no longer have any belief that putting something in a waste stream marked recycling is anything more than an act of hope.
