Les Mis worked as a film. That was a good move.

I haven't actually seen Cats on stage but I think I could cope with human cats in a theatre. On screen it just looks weird.

Anyone else seen it?

Dame Judy has preformed in musicals previously and she was originally cast as grizabella. Elaine Paige only came in as Judy dench snapped her Achilles’ tendon not long before cats was to open and was unable to preform.

I’m sure that was part of the reason why she was cast in the film.

Some of the twitter comments are hilarious !

Comefromaway · 19/07/2019 22:57

Katherine McPhee preformed as Jenna on Broadway & the West End but Waitress was written by Sara Bareilles (who has also performed as Jenna on Broadway.

Havingarethink · 19/07/2019 23:16

The twitter /Gardian comments have had me in stitches, can't wait to read the YouTube ones.

oldfatgreycat · 20/07/2019 08:51

I’m
Sure just dench played sally Bowles in cabaret in her youth so she has been in musicals.

oldfatgreycat · 20/07/2019 08:52

That would be Judy Dench obviously.

namechangeninjaevervigilant · 20/07/2019 08:53

Thank you *comefromaway. With a name like that no one could doubt your musical credentials ( Sara Bareilles is 39. )

I agree musical theatre has a wider range of ages, but they've not cast musical theatre stars. They've cast pop and r'n'b stars. And there are a few older female pop stars about, but that's not the choice the producers have made unfortunately.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 20/07/2019 09:03

Someone has set the trailer to the ballet scene music from Us... It oddly works!

AngeloMysterioso · 20/07/2019 09:20

I agree musical theatre has a wider range of ages, but they've not cast musical theatre stars. They've cast pop and r'n'b stars.

Judi Dench and Jennifer Hudson have both done musical theatre, Ian McKellen has done loads of theatre, James Corden has done theatre and was in the movie remake of Into The Woods, Rebel Wilson was in Pitch Perfect... the only pop and r&b stars are Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift and they’ll be a huge box office draw... I’d imagine millions of TS fans alone will go to the cinema to watch. It’s a numbers game at the end of the day, your average Joe West End Musical Performer just isn’t going to put bums on seats. I’d imagine the supporting cast is made up largely of West End/Broadway stars, after all Tom Hooper cast Samantha Barks as Eponine in Les Mis after seeing her in the West End and nobody had ever heard of her barring the 13 people who saw her in that BBC show.

Mrsjayy · 20/07/2019 09:27

I was one of the 13 Angelo Grin I loved those shows they were camp as Christmas!

bruffin · 20/07/2019 09:45

I’d imagine the supporting cast is made up largely of West End/Broadway stars,
Sizzi Strallen is in it,she is one of Bonnie Langford nieces all of whom are West End stead fasts, I saw her in Strictly Ballroom and Follies recently.

Francesca Howard (white cat trailer) is Royal Ballet
Daniela Norman is West End dancer (american in paris)

maddiemookins16mum · 20/07/2019 09:52

I think it may go the same way as The Greatest Showman, panned by the critics (fools) and loved by the public. I’ll watch it for Judi Dench alone (and be thankful it’s not Elaine Paige).

AngeloMysterioso · 20/07/2019 09:52

bruffin I love how much they’ve featured Frankie Hayward in the trailer, I didn’t realise her part was going to be so big!

Mrsjayy · 20/07/2019 09:55

I wonder how Angry Elaine Paige is she isn't in it ?

Comefromaway · 20/07/2019 09:57

Steven McCrae is also Royal Ballet & Robert Fairchild is American Ballet & he caused a s nation in An American in Paris.

Mrsjayy · 20/07/2019 10:12

The have just shown it on Bbc Breakfast it looks better every time I see it. Dd said they showed it at The Lion king and she thinks it was horrifying Shock

ShutTheFridgeUp · 20/07/2019 11:09

I can't wait to see it! I think the trailer was magical. And of course the cats are small compared to the set, they're fucking cats!

Bouldghirl · 20/07/2019 11:14

I loved the stage show but the trailer for the film left me a bit meh! I can’t put my finger on what doesn’t seem right (except that I didn’t like Jennifer Hudson’s delivery of Memory) but I’m pretty sure I’ll be at the cinema during the opening week.

Mrsjayy · 20/07/2019 11:20

I've not seen the stage show so I have nothing to go by so will let it wash over me and love it .

EnidButton · 20/07/2019 12:57

She'll be seething MrsJ 😤

Tom Hooper is a safe pair of hands so I bet it's actually alright. It does look exactly how I'd expect it to look (apart from the size of the cats). I'm curious enough to go and see it.

verystressedmum · 20/07/2019 13:30

I saw the trailer last night it looked quite good but then I've never seen Cats unfortunately, so I have nothing to compare it to.
I did see stuff on fb about the leading lady and how she looks.

Socksontheradiator · 20/07/2019 13:35

I've seen the trailer. Can't wait till the film is out. Going with my mum and best friend. DH thinks it looks rubbish.

Kaiylee · 20/07/2019 13:46

Clearly all the people bashing it have never seen the stage show... it’s just like the costumes they wear, except it’s CGI.

It's the cgi that ruins it for me. It takes it from odd but cool to odd and creepy. I also think the scale is totally off which bothers me. Why is the cat tiny compared to the knife and fork which is also totally out of proportion with the rest of the set? Nope.

Mrsjayy · 20/07/2019 14:23

Bet she is @EnidButton Wink

Lots of people don't cope well with CGI my dh hated planet of the apes really freaked him out.

EnidButton · 20/07/2019 16:43

The Polar Express gives me the willies.

I don't think this looks as bad as that but I'll have to watch the trailer again. I do like that they have professional well known dancers in it.
