Is this a drugs thing?!

While out hunting for snails, my son has just found a carrier bag filled with four or five jam jars. Each jar is light, but looks like it is filled with salt and pepper and is sealed with a tinfoil lid.

Any ideas what they could be? It’s right by an alleyway where it always looks like some dodgy deals happen at night.

Growing magic mushroooms

Patroclus · 18/07/2019 07:32

are their small holes injected into the foil?

WTFthatsweird · 18/07/2019 07:42

Injected into the foil?!
What the chuff are you imagining?!

OP the only thing to my knowledge that uses foil is crack or heroin (smoked). But I can't say I've never known someone to use a jam jar.

I do know it's possible to smoke crack using a coke can, so perhaps they were just being inventive?

Injected into the foil?!

That is apparently how you grow magic mushrooms. You get a jar of special substrate and then inject the spores into it. There was an instructive article about it in the Guardian at the weekend.

WTFthatsweird · 18/07/2019 08:25

Well I never knew that!
They grown in abundance on the South Downs so homegrown mushrooms has never been something I've come across.

Patroclus · 18/07/2019 08:26

I did it years ago with nutella jars (so you can slide the substrate out the top in one piece when its ready). The buy the spores in a huge syringe you have to inject through the top foil

Patroclus · 18/07/2019 08:28

the stuff inside is probably vermiculite.

Well you learn something new every day! I knew mumsnet would have an answer Grin
