Who have anger issues, depression or self harm ( in fact they often have all three issues).

I work with teens who need a help and I often find out what's genre of music they like and if possible see if there is a song they can relate to.
I print out the lyrics and they will highlight the words or sentences that they feel 'is them' It is a good way of getting a conversation started when they have been reluctant to talk.

My songs are getting a bit old . Emo is dated and not many of my young people listen to it any more which is a shame as it was quite good for material.
The kids love to take the piss out of the music I listen to so I'm hoping MNers have good taste or at least current knowledge.

Check out Billie Eilish!

lljkk · 17/07/2019 20:23

I will try to C&P dd's playlist.
21 Pilots still, Radiohead.
DD's a pretty cheerful sort, but we all like a good dirge at times.

OhMsBeliever · 17/07/2019 20:24

There may be more value is the piss taking than you think. I've always found playing the SUPER uncool old person quite helpful...

lljkk · 17/07/2019 20:36

Lots of these in DD's fave list

Abba, Adele, *alt-j, American Authors, Andy Grammer
Bastille, Bill Withers, Bleachers,
Camera Obscura, Clean Bandit,
Coldplay, Cold War Kids, Cosmo Jarvis, *Dion
Ed Sheeran, Ella Fitzgerald, Fall Out Boy, Hozier, *Jack Johnson
Jamie T, Khalid, Matt Nathanson, Michael Franti
Muse, Oasis, Passenger, Radiohead, Red Orange County, Sara Bareilles, Snow Patrol

Get a free membership on Spotify & type in 'sad music' I suggest.

I'm trying to get DD into Phil Collins, I think it's her sort of sound.

One of the beatbox songs for my session work is by Korn called Coming undone
The lyrics
Keep holding on
When my brains tickin' like a bomb
Guess the black thoughts have come again to get me
Sweet bitter words
Unlike nothing I have heard
Sing along Mocking bird
You don't affect me
That's right!
Deliver it to my heart!
Please strike!
Be deliberate
Wait
I'm coming undone
Irate
I'm coming undone
Too late
I'm coming undone
What looks so strong, so delicate
Wait
I'm starting to suffocate
And soon I anticipate
I'm coming undone
What looks so strong, so delicate
Choke, choke again
I thought my demons were my friends
Pity me in the end
They're out to get me
Since I was young
I tasted sorrow on my tongue
And this sweet chocolate gun does not protect me
That's right!
Trigger between my eyes
Please strike!
Make it quick now!
Wait
I'm coming undone
I'm irate
I'm coming…

This song covers anxiety, depression and anger. The kids often highlight the same lyrics such as tasting sorrow since they were young or looking strong and feeling delicate

It's that kind of things I'm after.

After a while we revisit the sheet to see how things are hopefully improving.

21 Pilots, Cavetown. She also likes My Chemical Romance.
King and Queen of the losers, REX Orange County

Even the new realise music I listen too is rubbish according to them! It's just banter but it's usually good fun!

Some great bands. Funny enough I heard 21 pilots on the radio for the first time in ages!!

Does anyone know specifyc songs. My kids aren't listening to Nirvana, puddle of mud, Peajam and all my old favourites.
I need stuff that they can relate to rather than introduce them to IYSWIM for our our 1 2 1 sessions.

My ds has different tastes to those above: Tyler the Creator, Slow Ty, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Travis Scott, ASAP Rocky, Suicide Boyz, Frank Ocean, Bakaar, Earl Sweatshirt, Pusha T, Pharrell and so on. He’s also quite into early rap NWA, Wu Tang Clan etc.

Dd likes musicals and Show Tunes Smile

notacooldad what are they into? Drill is very popular at the moment (it’s predominantly American) or Grime, people like Skepta, JME, Whiley- try them with Too Many Man (that’s always a party favourite).

Geraniumpink · 17/07/2019 21:01

Many of the recent (2019) Cavetown songs might suit. You can find the lyrics online.

lljkk · 17/07/2019 21:02

Tyler the Creator is on DD's list... a lot of rappers.

KittyMcKitty · 17/07/2019 21:04

I would say all re Anger - Tyler’s early stuff is VERY angry and Earl Sweatshirts Album I don’t like Shit, I don’t go outside.

Mac Miller who died recently was / is v popular.

Teens are v tribal in their music so I would find out what they are into first

KittyMcKitty · 17/07/2019 21:09

Earl Sweatshirt (who was in Odd Future with Tyler) was sent to reform school by his mother to try and sort out his drug use - he’s quite interesting to read about (father was a South African poet I think).

notacooldad · 17/07/2019 21:11

The kids are into generic pop or rap stuff. Last year it was cardi B. Most listen to Capital radio.

I'm staying away Drill. Skendo's stuff is not appropriate especially for the kids that want to emulate the gang culture and off their nut on god knows what.
Buggy Malone is more relatable than Stormzy for ' my kids' so I like to use him for how he's had been in jail I never the past but turned everything round. ( I get bored listening to how much money he has made though!) 😂

OP posts:
TheFatberg · 17/07/2019 21:13

Would this not be a good task to set the kids? To find a song by their favourite artist relating to a particular feeling?

KittyMcKitty · 17/07/2019 21:15

Stormzys not cool anymore according to ds as he sold out!

Tyler is worth looking into the early stuff is very angry but flower boy and Igor much more accessible. He’s also founded a v successful clothing empire and his own festival (Camp Flognaw).

notacooldad · 17/07/2019 21:15

Thanks for the ideas!

It kills me to listen to Capital and Rock FM! I'm more of a kerrang listener but most of my kids are teenage girls who are into chart stuff!!
I wouldn't have a clue! To think I used to record the charts every Sunday and know who ha friends moved up or down each week! Those days have gone😂😂😂
