Anyone been to Skiathos?

We’re going in two weeks and so excited to get some sun and lovely food!

Has anyone else been and can recommend particular beaches, things to do, good restaurants etc?

We are three adults so no need for child free activities We’re not particularly bothered about nightlife, just any day activities and nice places for dinner. Love exploring markets, shops, anything cultural/historical. We won’t have a car so will be relying on public transport. From googling I see there is a good bus route. We are staying in Agia Paraskevi (on the south coast).

I went there 25 years ago. I remember it being a lovely place. The harbour area was good to take a stroll around in the evening with bars and restaurants. I expect it's changed a bit now. God, I feel old as it only seems like yesterday. You'll love it.

@Itsacakebaby thanks! Yes I know someone who went years ago and loved it. I suspect it’s changed quite a bit in 25 years, as these places tend to do when they get overrun with tourists, but will hopefully still have some charm!

I stayed there (Agia Paraskevi) a few years ago. It was rather spoilt for me by being too hot (in the low 40s). The sea was like a bath, and people just stood around in it to cool off a bit (mainly smoking). My children were quite young and it wasn't ideal.

However, I liked Skiathos town and we had a good 'Mamma Mia' boat trip to Skopelos one day. We also had a boat trip to the north coast, including the old fortress at Kastro and Lalaria beach (accessible only by boat). That was lovely and good for snorkelling, but the beach was very popular with tour boats (and some private ones) so got quite crowded.

My favourite beach visit was to Agia Eleni. We didn't go till about 7, and we stayed there until about 10pm and swam as the sun went down. It's on the west coast, so there was a lovely sunset.

I didn't hire a car, so we used the bus all the time. It was cheap and reliable, but incredibly crowded (and hot)!

I left thinking I'd like to go back, but either in April or October. I'd never go to Greece in the summer again, but I am much less able to cope with the heat than when I was younger.

I went about 20 years ago (I was about 12) and loved it. As I recall there is one main straight road leading to harbour with lots of restaurants. We caught the bus up to an amazing beach out the town - no idea what it was called. We hired motorbikes and I did the boat trip to skopelos. The harbour is lovely and the beach was good as far as I remember!

Sorry should have said we were in the town and the beach we went to was Koukounaries Beach :)

I went about 7 years ago and loved it. It was the first time I'd taken the kids abroad on my own (10 & 15), and we went on a package holiday to Troulos.
Loved it enough to go again last year. Same resort though not same accommodation.

And the buses in skiathos are brilliant. Just one route end to end - Skiathos town to Koukanaries every 15 minutes or so.
