So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

Some people in the UK do call trousers pants actually. It's pretty common where I live. It is perfectly obvious from the thread that people are talking about underwear though.

Enclume · 16/07/2019 11:53

Such ridiculous shite.

I can't be the only one on here who has to use the launderette.

These threads about sorting and separating and washing at X temps make me laugh. I throw it all in on the warm cycle, £3.80. My nethers are fine.

Socksontheradiator · 16/07/2019 12:02

This Morning's expert sounds a bit daft!
Gotta love a mumsnet laundry thread.
We must have todger and fanjo bacteria on our coffee cups here too.
Tasty!!

CORSACORSA · 16/07/2019 12:23

I always wash at 60/70.

Never separate them either.

louise5754 · 16/07/2019 12:33

I used to use the 40 default setting.

DH used to say all his expensive T-shirt's and jumpers were shrinking.

I now use 30 for everything?

Is this not hot enough? X

dottiedodah · 16/07/2019 12:34

I use a well known brand of Laundry disinfectant. Its fairly dear at about £5 for a medium size bottle or Sainsburys/Tesco do their own brand for about £3.00 I think . If you tumble dry (high heat) for about 1/2 hour this should also kill off any bacteria

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/07/2019 12:37

There are bacteria on everything. We've gone a bit mad on this disinfectant thing, trying to kill bacteria which won't do us a bit of harm if we just leave them be.

I saw an advert for a carpet disinfectant the other day - how long is a carpet going to stay bacteria free?

I feel i should start a 'Save the Bacteria!' campaign.

Imanamechangeninja · 16/07/2019 13:13

My bras pass under my armpits but because there is always at least layer of tshirt/blouse/dress between the bra and my smelly pits I don’t feel the need to wash them daily.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/07/2019 13:19

In this case only, I can happily say 'I think we've had enough of experts'. What a load of wank.

I was everything at 30. Occasionally if necessary I'll add Dettol laundry stuff.

Reallybadidea · 16/07/2019 13:25

Trust me im an infection prevention lead

🤣🤣🤣

Ours used to go on about "blood spores in the air". LOL.

Ofthread · 16/07/2019 13:27

I boil my pants in acid and then pour over some liquid nitrogen.

longearedbat · 16/07/2019 13:54

Re a pp's comment - why are washing machine cycles so bloody long? I use the 30 degree one the most simply because it's the shortest, the next shortest being 40 degrees at 1hr 30 mins. I mean, some of the cycles are 2hr 30 mins. Does anybody's stuff need washing for that long?

NeverGotMyPuppy · 16/07/2019 13:55

@ofthread how irresponsible. Nitrogen doesn't kill the hardy knicker germs. I just wear mine once now and then throw them away. It's the only sure fire way.

isabellerossignol · 16/07/2019 14:02

How close to your armpits your bra is depends a lot on body shape. If your breasts are high on your body (sadly not the same as being all high and perky!) and you're the type of person who has difficulty finding a bra where the wires don't poke you under the arm then your bra very much comes into contact with the sweaty underarm area and a daily change would be needed. If you are of a different body shape, your bra is further from your underarm area so it's not going to smell sweaty.

orangeshoebox · 16/07/2019 14:03

@longearedbat have a look at the manual. my machine uses least elec & water on the 40 eco cycle.
almost 3 hours.
the short cycles often use lot more water which in turn takes a lot of elec to heat.

isabellerossignol · 16/07/2019 14:05

Sorry, that's a bit of a throwback to further upthread!

Personally I separate things and wash some hot, some cool, some long and some short and use my judgement each time as to what is needed.

Unfortunately my horrible washing machine only does an 800 spin on a lower temperature fast wash so using that option leaves everything dripping wet and it starts to go smelly before it dries, unless it's a very warm windy day for drying.

ThighsRelief · 16/07/2019 15:16

Pour vinegar on anything stinky and wash at 30.

In fact, just pour vinegar everywhere always.

Tigger365 · 16/07/2019 15:54

I’m a bit concerned about the people who wear liners/pads everyday

DogbertDogglesworth · 16/07/2019 16:46

In what way? @Tigger365?

dementedpixie · 16/07/2019 16:48

You don't need to be concerned about me, I'm just fine with my daily panty liner

Aram1nta · 16/07/2019 17:15

I wash everything at 60. I like to know it's clean

Girlwhowearsglasses · 16/07/2019 17:30

Um, @Imanamechangeninja
Do you wear your Bra over your t shits then? :-)

Tigger365 · 16/07/2019 17:30

The sheer amount of non-recyclable rubbish/plastic being used. Having something not as breathable that close to you. The thought makes me squirm, and itch. I don’t use pads on my period for those reasons!

DanceItOut · 16/07/2019 17:31

That all sounds like far to much of a flap to me. Everyone in our house has their own wash bag plus a bag for towels and sheets. I do one person’s washing per day everything at 40. It also means that once it’s dry and folded I don’t have to sort out who’s pants socks t-shirts etc are whose. I just hand them back their folded pile to put away.

Oscarsdaddy · 16/07/2019 17:34

I thought we are all actively encouraged to wash at 30 these days to save the planet

These so called experts know very little and often just come up with ludicrous theories to gauge a reaction, usually on Mumsnet
