Taking the afternoon off

Bit short notice this as the day in question is tomorrow but does anyone know if we're able to take DS out of school tomorrow afternoon for a family occasion? He's 5. Basically, BiL and nephews live abroad so we don't see them often but they've managed to grab a week in the UK (they arrived yesterday), although in a different part of the UK to us (staying with PiLs) and we were resigned to not seeing them, but they've just announced they're rattling down the M5 to see us tomorrow! DS would love to see them (and obvs they him) but they've got a play on at the end of the week which they're practicing in in the morning so we were thinking to have minimum impact we could grab him after lunch, but will school let him? Or more to the point can they stop me taking him??
Tia!

They can’t stop you taking him, but it will be an unauthorised absence.

Just tell them in the morning, that you need to pick him up at lunchtime.

Of course they can’t stop you taking him, you’re his parent - I’d take him out for the day and enjoy some time with your loved ones. He’s 5, a day off school is no big deal.

If he's in reception they can't do anything about it anyway but I would say that for half a day you should do it. It would be horrible for him to miss out.

SandraOhshair · 14/07/2019 20:00

Last week of term here, and attendance already recorded in the reports, so I'd take him out for the day!!!!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 14/07/2019 20:06

Collect him about 10 minutes after lunch so he gets his afternoon mark. I’m not a fan of taking children out of school but in this case I would.

TheBrockmans · 14/07/2019 20:08

Some schools do registration straight after lunch, so say if lunch finishes at 1pm and registration is done by 1.10 then they will be marked as there even if you then collect them at 1.15 they already have their mark and so are not considered absent.

Thanks for the reassurance all! 😊 I don't like taking him out normally and he doesn't like to miss school (so his attendance record is brilliant, basically!), and especially as they're doing the assembly rehearsal things... Think I'll go surah the forgotten appointment theory! 😁😁
Thanks again!
