Ranting hairdresser

So I’m a very quiet, non-confrontational person. But I keep thinking about my hair appointment two days ago and wondering whether I could have done anything other than what I did...!

Very nice hairdresser at first. Then after she put the dye on my hair she got a phone call and it all changed... she came back in a mood and started ranting about her sister in law. Proper style. How she was gonna punch her in the face and tell her husband on her.

So at first I nodded sympathetically and agreed it sounded a hard situation. But she just kept on ranting. And I got more and more uncomfortable and didn’t tell her to stop ranting because I was worried of upsetting her more and ending up with a bad hair cut!

Honestly, she ranted for a good half hour with increasing threats of violence towards the sister in law. Constantly. Non stop.

I tried:

Nodding and smiling sympathetically but not engaging
Offering my own (short) stories of falling out and making up
Closing my eyes and pretending to be relaxing

But it continued until the end of the appointment. Would anyone have done something different?

Oo and I also tried changing the subject multiple times...

I'd call and explain to the manager. How unprofessional.

It’s hard if you don’t like speaking up but I couldn’t have tolerated sitting there whilst she ranted, so you either put up with it or learn to find your voice.

“Enough!”

“Stop! I don’t want to hear about this.”

“You’ll have to deal with her later but right now can you concentrate on me please”.

Think it was compounded by the fact it was just me and her in the hairdressers... 😱

I would have done the same as you op. I know I wouldn't have had the guts to tell her to stop or to concentrate on me.

If she isn't the owner or manager of the saloon then I would make a complaint- if she is I would just not bother going back.

How did your hair look at the end?

lilyboleyn · 14/07/2019 14:34

Hair looked really good. I’m just a wuss!

Well at the risk of her stuffing my hair I probably wouldn't have said more than you. I'd let the manager know though and review them if necessary.

Think I’d keep my mouth shut. Good haircuts are worth the aggro, but if she starts again next time, tell her you’re a copper!
