Decluttering the home

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 09:22

Help! Where do I start? How do you all declutter your homes? There's just stuff everywhere- kids toys, games, clothes and just general stuff etc and it's stressing me out, dh is finally on board to do tip runs, but now I'm sat losing the will to live while trying to figure out where to start and the kids are trying to kill each other. Too early for cake and cocktails?

Go right now and put 10 things in a bag for the tip. Right now. I'll give you the next instruction in 5 minutes when your bag has 10 things in it.

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 09:28

Off I go with my bag!lGrin

Ten things. Most of it will be obvious crap. Now and again you'll pick up bits.

You can Marie Kondo one day. Today just think 'is this annoying', and if it is, put it in the bin.

Today is the first lap. All day fill ip bags with 10 things.

But the Real trick for today is that those bags have to go to the tip TODAY.

Put each bag in the boot of the car, before it is too full. You don't want it to rip and pick it up again.

At some point you'll find yourself in one particular area or room in the house. Try if you can to stay there.

Keep filling up bags. Make sure they get to the dump.

Ill get back to you later.

Have fun!

Even if you do it for an hour or two. That will make a massive difference.

OhioOhioOhio · 13/07/2019 09:37

(bet you picked up way more than 10 things)

Remember. You are on the first lap today.

Not cleaning. Picking up and filling bags. Getting them to the dump.

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 09:40

Wish me luck! Here I go! 😬

OP posts:
OhioOhioOhio · 13/07/2019 09:41

You won't need luck. You are on it.

The trick is you don't leave piles or jobs for another day. You have to entirely complete the first lap of clearing out.

Nobody else visiting your house may even see the difference. But you will absolutely know your house has 30 less bags of shit.

Big bin bag...fill it with any toys which are broken or have pieces missing...chuck

Other bag...toys which are fine but no longer played with...charity shop.

Categorise remaining toys...i.e. board games, dolls, etc

Clothes...

Stained/damaged...chuck
Don't fit...charity shop/sell

TalkToMeAboutSocialWorkPlease · 13/07/2019 10:32

OhioOhioOhio can you be in charge of me too please?!

I took about 10 bags of scrap clothes to the Oxfam bin in the supermarket car park the other day. The boot is full again, just waiting to go there again.

OhioOhioOhio · 13/07/2019 10:36

Just go. Do it.

Trick is to complete each lap. No piles or jobs for tomorrow that have been generated by your work today.

But it doesn't mean you'll be finished the overall picture.

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 10:40

3 black bags of old tatty broken toys and books so far! Got the kids at it with me! I was mean and told them for every one they pick to keep they need to get rid of 5Grin but it's working! 🎉

Ooh - I so need to do this. Can’t today but I’ve got some time off work in a couple of weeks so I’ll get some tips for then .....

OhioOhioOhio · 13/07/2019 10:43

Yay!!! Now have a coffee. Think carefully about the small thing you can achieve next.

Maybe the cutlery drawer?
Or pants and socks?

Clear out. No cleaning today.

Finish your coffee and do the next thing.

Completely.

Including going to the dump.

MegaClutterSlut · 13/07/2019 12:15

My advice would also be as soon as you've sorted some stuff, get rid of the crap straight away. I've sorted out before and the bags have been there a month later. I would go through it again and take stuff out Blush so get rid asap Grin

Waiting1987 · 13/07/2019 12:19

I need to join you on the clear out. The things hidden in cupboards are starting to escape when we open the doors, Would love a clutter free house.

TalkToMeAboutSocialWorkPlease · 13/07/2019 12:43

I think my big sticking point is thinking oh I could sell this, I shouldn't give it away. But I should just give it shouldn't I? In reality, where would I sell it? To whom?

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 12:44

3 black sacks of my shoes ready to goBlush and a shoe cupboard, and another 4 bags of our clothes! I'm being brutal! If it's not been worn/played with in the last few months then it's going!

ChubbyMummy12 · 13/07/2019 15:02

Jamhandprints · 13/07/2019 15:09

Well done! :-)

TheClitterati · 13/07/2019 15:16

Keep de littering.

But vitally you must stop the incoming! Question what comes in. You need to change your spending and purchasing habits. It's a wonderful process.

TheClitterati · 13/07/2019 15:19

Decluttering! Not delittering Blush

MajesticWhine · 13/07/2019 15:23

I'm joining for inspiration. My house is a tip.

Pipandmum · 13/07/2019 15:27

I don’t like the Kondo method - I’d rather do one room at a time. You seem to be well on your way.
However I disagree with just taking stuff to the dump. At least have a charity pile too.
But I’ve been seriously decluttering and have sold loads on eBay! I’ve been paying a friend to help me with it all and she gets half of what I sell as she handles the listing and packing/shipping. Still I’ve pocketed over £1000 and so has she! We bundle things like Tesco t shirts - say 4 t shirts for £6. Anything with a branded name (Nike etc) sells well. My son sells on debop - pricier things like Diesel jeans. It takes time (which is why I’ve got someone else doing it) but worth it and better for the environment.

Dockray · 13/07/2019 15:29

I need Ohio to follow me round all day to keep me motivated. Off to fill a bag with 10 things...
