Do kids not get limos to the prom any more?

My friend's 16 year old daughter's prom is this evening. He is dropping her and her friends off in his car. I said I was surprised she wasn't getting a limo. I'm told this is no longer in fashion, and that all the kids are taken by their parents these days, who get out of the car with them at their destination and take their photo.

Surely it hasn't changed that much in the 15 years since I had my prom? We would rather have died than have our parents get out of the car outside the venue and take our photos.

I'd sooner have died than get in a limo.

KnifeAngel · 10/07/2019 13:49

It was my Dd's recently. There seemed to be a mixture of those in limos/fancy cars and those dropped off by their parents. My Dd had a vintage car.

DS and a group of friends went in a campervan belonging to his friend's parents. I offered to pay for a limo but he said it wasn't cool. That was 3 years ago.

A group from dns school organised an open top bus to take them round town and to the prom venue. Think it came to around £20 each and they had a whale of a time - absolute Pita to organise though.

But there always seems to be a bit of a competition to have the most 'out there' arrival... We've had tractors, diggers, horse and drag trap thingy, back of trikes....so anyone who has access to something slightly quirky turns up in that.

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2019 13:56

My DS and his mates hired a big tacky Hummer limo. Grin There were a few others too. They knew it was tacky but just fancied doing it.

stucknoue · 10/07/2019 13:58

We used Uber but then parents went too (private school)

MaddieElla · 10/07/2019 14:01

My DD used my FIL's vair posh car. But they parked outside the venue and I walked her in because she didn't want to be centre of attention.

She would die if she had to pull up in a limo.

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2019 14:04

I didn't realise that parents would drive ahead to the venue to take pictures. Confused No idea that was a thing.
I dropped him at his mate's house where the limo would pick him up and picked him up from the venue at the end IIRC. Didn't see anything!

MyOpinionIsValid · 10/07/2019 14:06

Limos are very 1990's.

IggyAce · 10/07/2019 14:09

Our local secondary’s banned limos a several years ago, the parents drop them off at the school and they are then taken be coach to the venue. I think it’s done this way so the posh venue isn’t overrun with cars and parents, this all happens at the school.

Thecomfortador · 10/07/2019 14:11

We didn't have a prom let alone any way of getting there. That was only 5 years ago 1995

BowiesJumper · 10/07/2019 14:24

We got pissed on white lightning in the park and then stumbled up to the school disco. So no limos involved... but it was the 90's.

perhapsimight · 10/07/2019 14:28

I don't think limos were a 90s thing! Ours was not called a prom and it was just in the school hall. We got stoned with the art teacher in the playing field.

I really hope limos are not cool, surely grotesque displays of wealth are not desirable for our forward thinking youth!

My prom was in 2004 and everyone got limos. It was the very height of sophistication as were the Smirnoff Ices we drank afterwards.

Who knew that parents' cars would one day come into fashion.

It seems like having your own film crew us the way forward, especially if you live in an area classed as a deprived town

They were cool as in the early 2000s, and this was at a comprehensive in the North East. I think the companies did prom specials on them and they were about £15 each. No one had grotesque wealth.

What year was your prom, IcedTea? I wonder when it changed.

My car is a limo.

Comefromaway · 10/07/2019 14:38

At dd's prom no-one was told where the venue was. They had to arrive at school at 6pm for photos then parents were handed a slip of paper with the surprise venue on. Transport was a mixture of parental cars, vintage cars etc including an ambulance!

Ds's school is in fairly rural area so prom travel often involve tractors and horses etc.

Parker231 · 10/07/2019 14:39

We took DT’s as the event was for parents as well. Everyone arrived with their parents.

Alloftit · 10/07/2019 14:40

Don’t know, honestly I think limos we’re on their way out when i had my prom and that was 10 years ago.
I drove myself in a tractor 😂

CathScarlett · 10/07/2019 14:40

My car is a limo.

I gather you'll have to hire a Fiesta if you're taking anyone to a prom.

I'm relieved to hear that the afterparty tradition is still going strong though.

Those were the days. Except it was Thunderbird. Can't even smell the stuff now without heaving.

fuckfuckfuckitall · 10/07/2019 14:41

Mine was in 2008 and 2009 ... the second one we hired a dreadful playboy limo ... everything was bright pink and it came complete with a few clubland CDs and sparkling wine . Cost £25 each . It didn’t make that much difference , would have been easier parents taking us . I can’t remember how I got home now which will bother me for a while !!

Grin You remember it though! Now that you mention it I have no idea how I got home either.
