Do kids not get limos to the prom any more?

My friend's 16 year old daughter's prom is this evening. He is dropping her and her friends off in his car. I said I was surprised she wasn't getting a limo. I'm told this is no longer in fashion, and that all the kids are taken by their parents these days, who get out of the car with them at their destination and take their photo.

Surely it hasn't changed that much in the 15 years since I had my prom? We would rather have died than have our parents get out of the car outside the venue and take our photos.

encourage single or little use of clothing (the second biggest contributor to climate change is fast fashion), and based on heterosexuality. Adding to climate change by a fuel guzzling vehicle is even more unacceptable.

Wow, you really are a fully functioning member of the fun police aren't you? Such a depressing read.

A ‘mid life crisis’ sports car Grin, sparkletastic

SweetMelodies · 12/07/2019 13:34

Yes I had a mid-2000’s prom (so 15 years ago! Blush )

It was all limos, tacky fluorescent strapless prom dresses, side-swept fringes and tight curls, tiaras, maybelline dream matte mousse, spider eye lashes and sneaked-in Smirnoff ice! Grin

I must say looking at my younger cousins pics on FB proms these days do seem a lot ‘classier’ judging by their dresses etc

I dropped DD and a couple of her friends off at school, then school had organised a vintage bus to take them to the venue

No one arrived at school in a limo or anything wacky

MaudebeGonne · 12/07/2019 13:38

We had the Debs in rural Ireland in the 90's. Nice dress, glitter hair spray, mass and a dinner dance. No limo's, parents would drive (unless you were going out with someone with their own car).

Who the f gets limos?

growlingbear · 12/07/2019 13:43

We walked through the park to a school disco in the falling apart sixth form centre where we were allowed a thimbleful of warm Cinzano diluted in orange squash. It was the worst party I had ever been to. 1980s. Limos and special dresses were unheard of then. I'm glad the fad for limos is dying out. So tacky and unnecessarily expensive.

SingingSands · 12/07/2019 13:43

We got a taxi in 1996.

Don't see many limos now round here either, usually parent who has the biggest SUV car (Discovery/Audi/Porsche) gives it a wash and hoover and can then take a group of 5 or 6.

I had mine 10 years ago and nobody had a limo.

We all thought it was a bit chavvy

SweetMelodies · 12/07/2019 13:54

It probably depends on the school as well

Kenworthington · 12/07/2019 13:54

It’s ds2s prom tonight. Him and two other mates are going in one of the parents new Mercedes. We are going ahead to take photos when they arrive.

I had the same thought when my neighbour's 16 year old son went off for his with all his friends a few weeks ago. Actually I was secretly hoping they would have a limo as DS age 3.5 would've been so excited to have seen it pull up outside and drive away. But no, my neighbours took them in their two cars. Disappointing!

Grin Yes! This is how a prom should be! They're doing it all wrong.

My leavers' ball (we refused to call it a prom) was in 2008 and it was all lifts from parents. However, I have absolutely no recollection of how I got to the after party 2 towns away 😂🙈

I had a long, spaghetti-strap black number from Topshop for my 90s dinner dance. I was braless (didn't know any better in those days) and mortifyingly, a strap broke and my tit fell out while I was taking my turn dancing with the headmaster. Luckily a boy from upper sixth came to my rescue with a safety pin - I've never shopped at Topshop since.

Headmaster and upper sixth sounds posh but it was just a rural comp.
