Do kids not get limos to the prom any more?

My friend's 16 year old daughter's prom is this evening. He is dropping her and her friends off in his car. I said I was surprised she wasn't getting a limo. I'm told this is no longer in fashion, and that all the kids are taken by their parents these days, who get out of the car with them at their destination and take their photo.

Surely it hasn't changed that much in the 15 years since I had my prom? We would rather have died than have our parents get out of the car outside the venue and take our photos.

Ds2 left school in 2015 and limos were popular in our area. Things were definitely competitive to see who could out do each other!
Ds, who is the least materialistic person ever said, when asked about how he was getting there always replied Shanks Pony!!
He didnt walk there of course but he did get some Confused looks from those who hadn't heard the expression before!

DD's at boarding school so they all go together on a yellow school bus (US). I don't think there actually are any limos within about 200 miles of her school.

My comment about it being a display of wealth was not meaning that they actually cost lots of money but that the kids liked the look of what they consider people with money to have.

I meant that it is better if this is not what they are aspiring to and thinking is cool.

We got stoned with the art teacher in the playing field.
Confused

Not so many years ago and my kids would have asked "what's a prom" and "what's a limo"...

Pipandmum · 10/07/2019 16:15

We had a pre party with a photographer and a relative of the hostess got six souped up ford fiestas to take them via a drive around the town revving the engines. Vintage bus was an idea too. There was another preparty I think there might have been a limo and parents dropping off. Then post party most kids changed then got there via parent’s and shared rides - collection was next morning by 10am!

Kez200 · 10/07/2019 18:03

My son and his mates walked! A sort or silent protest against the norms whilst still going and being normal!

bengalcat · 10/07/2019 18:05

Mine got the tube there and an Uber home

TroubleWithNargles · 10/07/2019 18:07

Perhaps everyone has finally come to their senses and realised that hiring a limo is a huge and rather absurd waste of money?

PerspicaciaTick · 10/07/2019 18:15

We didn't have a prom. School escorted us from the premises after our last exams and told us never to darken their doors again.
Which made going back for 6th form 8 weeks later a bit weird.

33goingon64 · 10/07/2019 18:29

I had mine 23 years ago and had never heard the word limo then. We all went in parents cars. I guess people realised what a ridiculous waste of money it is.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2019 18:34

Haha! Limos very 00s. Not 90s, that was too early. That's funny that they aren't in fashion any more. I went to my boyfriend's prom for his posh grammar school and I think he drove us himself :o

DeReynolds · 10/07/2019 18:35

A limo to prom is 100% a "whooo" nowadays.

SeptemberIssue · 10/07/2019 18:41

My local school stopped this to avoid any bullying/disparaging of those who could not afford it, which I think is perhaps the best way to go. The kids arrive at the school & are taken by coach to the venue.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 10/07/2019 18:49

We had a sixth year dinner dance way back in 89- think I caught the bus

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 10/07/2019 18:49

Limos for prom are tacky aren't they? Not sure when fashions changed but definitely out for now. Sure it'll all come full circle.

Gingerkittykat · 10/07/2019 18:50

My nephew and his friends had a converted fire engine take them to primary school prom!

GreenTulips · 10/07/2019 18:53

Prom here

One group had limo balloons prom cake professional photographer champagne fake tan fake nails up dos professional makeup

Other got a dress did their own hair and makeup and left out the fake tan, some had lifts some got taxis

Does it matter?

ForalltheSaints · 10/07/2019 18:54

Proms are an American tradition, encourage single or little use of clothing (the second biggest contributor to climate change is fast fashion), and based on heterosexuality. Adding to climate change by a fuel guzzling vehicle is even more unacceptable.

I think if not banning them, any school that has one should be ineligible for an Outstanding mark by school inspectors.

Tryingtoworkitoutagain · 10/07/2019 19:35

Mine was 2005 - up until a few years before that people did take limos but we were starting to get to the point of “i want that £20 for clothes, shoes drink “ my dad drove me,my +1 and my friend and her +1 we were 4 friends anyway was loads of people who got lifts from parents and just standard taxis. The odd people did get limos

AquaPris · 10/07/2019 19:53

When I went in 2011 we all got a joint bus

How odd, it's totally normal to take a same-sex partner or friend to prom - at least here in the US. Two of my daughters have taken same-sex friends or dates. Surely you do that in the UK too?

Aragog · 10/07/2019 20:11

DD's prom (Y11 one) was last year. Pretty much all were taken by car, by parents DD went with her friend's mum. DH picked them here and 4 friends up after.

Too far for a limo really anyway - was at the other side of our city - and a lot of the people from her school lived a fair distance away.

HappydaysArehere · 10/07/2019 20:16

This all sounds mad to me. Surely the limo is for your wedding! For goodness sake it is a lovely occasion to celebrate the end of school, exams etc. A pretty dress and a pretty girl, what is not to like. Don’t spoil it with that American commercialism.

Lalallama · 10/07/2019 20:24

My children aren't quite old enough yet (only year 9) but I have never heard of a prom. I left school in the 90s and nothing like that ever happened. Is it like a leaving party? With limos???! It sounds insane.
