Does anyone else get really stressed by this?

By this I mean anything house renovation-y. Even stuff like having the bloody kitchen painted leaves me in a right flap. Over the next couple of months I have to do the following:

  • Have all my carpets removed and replaced due to moth infestation
  • Have a couple of rooms in flat fumigated due to said moth infestation. Luckily don't need the entire flat doing.
  • Have kitchen worktops and flooring replaced

I can't cope with it! I have a beloved cat who cannot go into a cattery but he is also an indoor cat so I cannot make him go outside while the above is being done. No idea what to do with him really. I have a toddler but he goes to nursery. I have a problem with my back so I cannot really do any heavy lifting of furniture for carpets and I cannot empty out my entire bedroom because there is nowhere else my bed and wardrobe can go!

I am in a right flap about all this and it's pathetic.

I know how you feel. It's all the mess and upheaval and having stuff in rooms where it doesn't belong.
We had a new bathroom, it took a week and I was jittery and stressed the whole time.

I want to get the carpets cleaned professionally this summer but I can't face emptying the rooms/moving stuff about.

I get it, we bought a doer upper with a teenager, toddler and two housecats. We are obviously insane.

Anyway, we have so far has the kids bedrooms stripped and plastered, new carpets, knocked down a wall, bricked up 2 doors, had patio doors installed, kitchen out (and haven't had a proper kitchen in 3 months!) walls plastered, painted, then a new kitchen in oh and a full re wire and we still have to do the floor in there, as well as;

every other wall to be stripped and plastered in the house
every other room to be carpeted/wood floored
new bathroom eventually
tackle the garden

so far no cats have escaped, and the teen and toddler have been at school and nursery.

The cats have felt a bit inconvenienced I think, but they haven't suffered particularly. I just made sure everyone was aware that they were not allowed out under any circumstances and so far so good.

it has been stressful, and living in clutter is driving me slowly insane BUT my advise would be, do not do it all at once if you can avoid it.

Make sure you have a room at least, that remains untouched, with no furniture in it that doesn't belong there, so you have somewhere to relax that doesn't feel like a building site.

I am going to be very cliché here, and I have wanted to scream at everyone who has said this to me but "it will be worth it"

it may not seem like it now but you will be glad you've done it when its over.

Regarding my the cat - can you shut him in a room with everything he needs whilst work is going on? It'll be less stressful for the cat and you won't have to worry about him.

Know how you feel only just getting a bathroom done has nearly caused a divorce in this house Angry

EstherLittle · 10/07/2019 15:01

We are getting a new roof so all the work is external but it is still massively stressful and so expensive. Feeling drained by the experience and stressed about money but it had to be done.

Good luck Op!

We live in a tiny 2 bedroom flat with no garden so there are very few places to escape to as well!

Half the problem is admin really, just trying to phone all the various builders and tradespeople, getting quotes...ugh.

Yep, hate it, all the getting quotes, organising, making decisions, shifting stuff about, having people in the house. We have tiny rooms and there just isn't anywhere to shift stuff to, especially upstairs. Our kitchen badly needs doing but I can't face it right now.

I get stressed too. Ongoing illness, a house with too much shit, that people won't part with. Animals, children. I'm stressed typing it!!!
