Musing on screen use around children

For a while now I've been musing on attitudes to adults using their phones or tablets around their kids. I use my phone a lot. I read facebook, mumsnet, instagram, my email etc. My lad is 4. He isn't allowed to use our mobiles or tablets but he does watch far too much telly.
If i wasn't reading stuff on my phone i would be reading a paper or kindle book. I have always read in any spare minutes i have, it's just the medium i use to read has changed.

I get the feeling that reading a paper book would be more acceptable than reading a mobile phone.

I'm just wondering what other people's thoughts are? If you think books are preferable can you tell me why?

I don't see that it matters what device they are reading on, just that they are reading. We never just sit on our phones while our daughter (nearly 2) is around and never have them out at meal times. She does like to look at photos on our phones but we do this together and talk about the pictures.
I prefer a book but that is just because that was the medium of my time. It is likely that our kids will prefer an electronic device.

See i do use my phone around my lad - when he's playing by himself or watching telly for instance. I reckon some folk would see that as terrible parenting, and I'm wondering if reading a book would be perceived as badly.
Because most of what i do on my phone is read, just not novels.
