Woke about three hours ago to the sound of someone getting in my car- they fled but locked car as they left. Went downstairs to discover the bastards had drilled the back door lock, had a good look round downstairs and taken every spare key available from the pot we kept them in As well as taking my purse. I can’t get to work as I have no car keys and my work keys are in the car, have had police, emergency door lock people and breakdown truck (couldn’t move car to secure compound without making too much noise and maybe damaging the car ) and am now sitting in bed doing sudoku, every light in the house is on, just in case the bastards come back to finish the theft of my car !! I am beyond angry with myself for not using the house alarm I got fixed last week and for keeping so many keys in the same place and so easy to find 😡😡never thought it would happen to me . I’m such an idiot

Years ago we had our car broken into by a husband and wife who drove off in their Jag. They did it for kicks apparently, even risking their reputation as local business owners. Couldn’t pin enough evidence on them but the police knew exactly who they were. They took a new baby car seat and pushchair. They didn’t even have kids.

Ex police staff here and we used to advise people to take their car keys upstairs with them at night. Then that changed to leave your car keys downstairs, so the thief doesn’t need to confront you and possibly hurt you.

We got burgled overnight 2 years ago. Stole my handbag, husband's wallet, car keys and our car.

Police and soco told us to take everything upstairs with us at night as burglars want to come in and out quickly and won't risk confronting home owners.

To be fair, our local crime prevention PC advised that actually it's better that they are together and easy to get to (well, safe from casual thieves, but not from proper burglars) as it then reduces the risk that they will go hunting and possibly harm anyone in the house - or cause further damage in frustration.

Depends how badly they want it, I guess.
Your average family car, yes, they might move on to an easier target.
But a performance car, or something stolen to order, they might be absolutely determine to get it.
We had offenders whose MO was to
reach in through cat flaps and others who were known for “fishing” with wires or hooks through the letterbox.
There are so many variables, but with no partner, I’d rather lose the car than have them come in the house.

Sorry to hear op! Hopefully you'll get sorted soon if you aren't already, it's awful now but they're just possessions and can easily be replaced.

I've been told to leave your car keys at the top of the stairs, if they're wanting a quick exit then they wont come up the stairs but if they're brave enough to come upstairs then you avoid confrontation!

As it was my sons car they were after, I hid both sets of keys upstairs last night! Today they are with me at work. I didn't think the burglary would affect me but I was shaking as I left the house, triple checked all the windows were shut properly (not just on the first lock as they have been in the hot weather) and doors were locked, hid internal garage door key rather than leaving it in the lock as usual. And now at work I'm feeling nauseous wondering if they will come back for the car during the day. Its not the breaking in that would upset me so much as my sons upset if anything happened to that car! it really is his pride and joy - he's been through some rough times, is finally on an upward progression at work (forces) but doesn't have much else in his life so this car is everything to him at the moment.
