I'm looking for a summer holiday for next year but cant find a location I like.
I want a really big attractive sandy beach that has lots of space. But I also want it in a nice pretty attractive village/very small town.

The nearest I have come to this is Alvor in Portugal BUT the problem is we are restricted to schools hols so it is probably going to be heaving, I really want quietish.

Im looking at Spain , Portugal, southern half of France, Italy. I'm being too fussy aren't I?

The school holiday aspect is the problematic thing there because you want something that a lot of other people want al at the same time. Perhaps the best chance of achieving that might be in the UK. If, for example, you go to a western isle of Scotland at the end of August, then Scottish children will be back at school by then. The beaches are gorgeous, the towns are pretty.

If you mean somewhere hotter, then you need to look for somewhere that's quite tricky to get to, as that will limit the numbers of people visiting. Look for a smallish island. Islands in the Gulf of Morbihan are very pretty. Les iles Hyeres perhaps? www.hyeres-tourism.co.uk/

Stoupa in Greece

Cala Llonga, Ibiza.

Nice big spacious beach, not many hotels and a smallish resort. Also close to the airport.

Puerto de Mazzaron in Murcia, Spain. God I miss our family holidays there - kids grown up now but we had many years brilliant hols there. It's quite Spanish though.

Cwtches123 · 09/07/2019 21:13

Mojacar in Spain.

RowenaCoxwell · 09/07/2019 21:19

De Haan in Belgium- town is lovely and the beaches in Belgium are lovely and clean and can be deserted if you go just a little bit out of the towns. We’ve been to Sunparks De Haan many time with the kids, it’s great fun and cheap.

Blois plage Ile de re should suit. But you’re too late for this year.

Tryingtoworkitoutagain · 09/07/2019 21:55

Sandy beaches with plenty of space - you need Donegal in Ireland - we just don’t get the weather (that often) to match! But when we do it’s the most beautiful country in the world !

cranstonmanor · 09/07/2019 21:56

Schiermonnikoog, Netherlands. Big beach (really big), small island, 1 village.

reluctantbrit · 09/07/2019 22:03

Port d’Alcudia, Majorca

Try Puerto Pollensa in Majorca. Next resort along from Alcudia. Alcudia is not small and quiet in school hols! We have done both and Puerto Pollensa is way nicer. We are staying at Puerto Azul if you need hotel recommendations.

gabsdot · 10/07/2019 08:13

Csavio, in Italy. We stayed there with eurocamps. The beach was beautiful.

Gedge77 · 10/07/2019 15:23

Thanks some great ideas

@Familyband -Puerto Pollensa does look nice but it looks as though it gets busy. Did you go in August?

Malgrat de Mar in Spain, near Barcelona.

Lovely little old town, lovely great beach. Only 40 mins away from the airport and has a water park nearby although we didn’t go.

ElizaPancakes · 10/07/2019 15:54

Here’s some pics. We went for a weekend in August and while it was busy, the beachfront wasn’t especially and it was quiet during the day. Not many bars but lots of restaurants which did make the promenade busy in the evening.

The pic of the beach is from our hotel room, which was once grand but run down down. Beds were awful but the rest was fine.

Ive been to cabanas in Portugal it's a short trip from tavira. Super super quiet not a lot of tourists at all stayed at cabanas Park resort. You do have to get a boat out to the beach but it's an absolutely beautiful peaceful quiet large beach. The town is lovely not a lot in it either very small but a few nice restaurants and bars definitely no strip nightlife and it's all a lovely board walk. We took a taxi into tavira one of the days which again is a beautiful picturesque town. We have looked at alvor for next year but we are worried it might be a bit too busy touristy for what we usually like in a holiday

BitOfAKerfuffle · 10/07/2019 16:08

Beach in cabanas on a hot day in May we spent the day we didn't see too many other people around and our child had a ball
