School clubs and activities

Does your primary school have lots of clubs at lunchtime/after school, and are they run by the teaching staff?

We're a relatively small school (one form intake) and have virtually nothing - no choir, musical instruments etc. Just a couple of sports clubs run by external agencies coming in. The teachers don't do any clubs at all. Is this standard nowadays? I really feel my kids are missing out!

I know individuals with great skills to offer have approached the school to come in and run groups, but nothing happens. Just interested to see how other schools compare?

I’m a teacher and we don’t run many teacher led clubs but there are a few during the year. Regular clubs are run by external companies. Teachers simply are overworked and don’t have time for optional extras. I would rather run a lovely club than spend time filling in paperwork but that is what is standard now. Your kids are missing out because there’s too much workload put upon teachers!

Saying that, I’m sure there are schools that still have teacher led clubs. Just the same as there are some that don’t.

Thanks for replying, its nice to know you'd like to do them, but sad that you all have to do paperwork instead!

A very sad sign of the times, I still remember my recorder group with fondness!

Wow SummerSix, I'm very envious! How many kids at your school?

One form entry here.
We have choir which is run by a teacher - some rehearsals are after school.
Clwb Urdd is run by external Urdd staff for a small fee
Sometimes a cricket club run by a teacher
Lots of after school and lunchtime practice for Eisteddfod and Book slam etc competitions run by teachers.
Music lessons are run by the county music service.
The teachers go above and beyond to provide the kids with lots of extra curricular opportunities in school hours. I don’t feel they are missing out at all.
