Following on from ‘adult’ things you can’t do, what ‘adult’ things are you FABULOUS at?

(Lighthearted - and not rude)

In a recent threat we discussed the ‘adult’ things we can’t do (for me it’s gardening), so I thought it would be nice to celebrate the things we are brilliant at and take pleasure in(even the small things). I am brilliant at:

Making omelettes
Pairing socks
Throwing away stuff I don’t need anymore.

What about you?

Making pastry and, as an offshoot of this, mince pies.

On a slightly niche note, I'm also very good at adapting to high altitude. Have been on tours at up to 7,000 m altitude with no problems.

235g caster sugar
2 eggs
125g butter (I use salted)
100g dark chocolate
90g plain flour
100g pecans/walnuts (optional)

Beat eggs and sugar till fluffy
Melt chocolate and butter together in a pan on low, leave to cool
Combine egg and chocolate mixes, fold in flour and nuts. Pour into 20cm square lined tin, bake for 30/35 mins at 160.

You can put another 100g broken up/chopped chocolate on top of the mixture before you bake it. Works v well gluten free as well if needed.

I’ve served it on a glass with this sauce as a waist busting pudding:

6tbsp soft brown sugar
200ml double cream
2tbsp butter
Melt all together till caramely

I'm really good at pulling together costumes for DD.

My biggest triumph so far was when DD changed her mind about what weather-related outfit she wanted to wear for school that day (from previously-agreed rainbow because she had a rainbow t-shirt so it was easy to storm).

I pulled together an awesome 'storm' outfit - including cutting out a white felt lightening bolt cut and sewing it onto a black top - in 10 minutes flat. If I'd had another 5, I would have done little lightening bolts on her ankles too (black leggings) but even as it was she looked brilliant and she loved it. Smile

I can parallel park faultlessly , 9 times out of 10
I make an amazing Victoria sponge, 9 times out of ten
I remember all birthdays
I am excellent at choosing presents
I can make a meal out of apparently nothing

BikeRunSki · 08/07/2019 21:17

I can make brilliant dressing up outfits. DS has 4 more days at First school, and I have never bought one.

mommybunny · 08/07/2019 21:25

I’m pretty good at wrapping presents (I went nuts at Costco a few years back and now I have enough ribbon to wrap presents till 2050). I’m crap at selecting and buying them, however.

I’m very, very good at proofreading DH’s shockingly drafted work correspondence. (Had to shout 5 times “it’s prosTATE, not prosTRATE!!!” before he got it just today.)

Also pretty good at baking - cakes and pastry do not faze me in the least.

Other than that, I’m at a complete loss.

MindyStClair · 08/07/2019 21:27

I can put together flat pack furniture without issue - and I actually enjoy it!

SnugglySnerd · 08/07/2019 21:29

Laundry
Cooking
Helping dd with homework
That's about it.

cricketmum84 · 08/07/2019 21:29

I'm a really good cook (even though the 10 year old whinges about everything that's out in front of her) and I'm quite experimental. I love buying a new recipe book and trying out new things.

I think I'm quite a good gift picker too. I love picking out things that are really personal to the recipient that I hope they will love. I like to make people feel special.

FenellaMaxwell · 08/07/2019 21:30

I’m not bad at flower arranging.
I always have a stamp/plaster/needle and thread in my bag.
Actually I’m really good at mise en place. So for Christmas, things will always look lovely - the right china, crackers which match the candles and tree, all the forks matching etc.

Polly7805 · 08/07/2019 21:38

I'm good at cleaning
That's it lol

Whyismycatanasshat · 08/07/2019 21:58

I have the look and the voice. Very handy when working in a YOI.

I am seen to be calm and collected in all sorts of situations. People often comment on my un-flappable nature. It’s all an act!

I’m a good story teller. My nieces and nephews love my imaginary tales and my guides refer to “story time with whyismy...” if I’m recounting something to them, I’ve been assured over the years story-time is said in a nice way, not here we go again!

mommybunny · 08/07/2019 22:17

Seeing another thread made me recall: I was actually rather good at sleep training my DCs. DS slept from 11 til 6 from 9 weeks, and DD from 6! I don’t believe it was just “luck” - it was something I pursued very diligently (my DM and DMIL might have said “obsessively”) but it saved my sanity and allowed me to go back to work confident that we’d all have a good night’s sleep.

carlywurly · 08/07/2019 22:43

I'm a shit hot multitasker.
I make good biscuits, cheese sauce and can time a roast to perfection
I can muddle through in several languages

I am very impractical, can't fix a thing beyond light bulb and battery changes and have zero sense of direction
